what did people with uc do before all of these drugs? they haven't been around that long , except maybr the prdnisone?

Have surgery I guess if the symptoms were that bad.  I know someone who did that about 16 years ago because nothing worked - not even 6mp (which was still in its early days then).  Today he probably would not have needed the surgery - or certainly not as quickly.

My friend's Dad had UC in the days where pred was the only drug. He also spent a lot of time in hospital (once almost a year!). My friend's main memory of his Dad through this time is that he was really overweight and always sick. He used to have to carry an emergency pack with washclothes and a change of clothes around with him all the time. Once Imuran came out, he started on that and never had a flare again! He lost all the weight and started to get into triathlons and all sorts of crazy stuff when he was in his 60s.

Not everyone with IBD can take the oral RX used for IBD, like myself...and I use natural anti-inflammatories which have been around since the dawn of time.

My great grandmother had some sort of bowel problem. This was back in the 1920's. They didn't have a name for it back then but both me and gma think that she may of had either Uc or Cd. She didn't take anything for it but my gma remembers her taking her food and mushing it up real good so she could eat.

I've often thought about that too. Where would I be today if I didn't have any medicine to take care of my symptoms......like would I even be alive??? Or chained to the toilet day in and day out??? Of course if medicine wasn't invented for this, there is always the natural route.

My parents have a friend that was dx'd in the 60's. She was dx'd and had surgery within two days. They didn't give her a choice then.

I know if there were no meds available I'd have had surgery about five years ago. I feel so lucky to have developed this at a time when there are so many treatments being developed.

The poor guy in the movie Amazing Grace had UC in the late 1700s, I just couldn't imagine living back then with this. No plumbing, probably horrible tiolet paper, the only meds were opium types as far as I know. People probably used more natural remedies I would assume. My friend from Russia is always trying to make me try these teas and natural oils and things. She says that when she used to live there, they didn't have insurance or doctors and would only use natural remedies because they had no choice, she swears by them.

Yeah, it would have been pretty horrible. Also, not as many people used to have IBD. They are becoming more and more widespread throughout the past couple decades.

It is believed that the composer Beethoven died of UC related problems. He had chronic stomach and abdomen issues for many years. Back then lead was used to try and cure these conditions. He died of lead poisoning.

It is thought that he had UC or CD.

not to be morbid, but my understanding is people died of it, at least before surgery became on option. my GI said that severe dehydration used to kill a decent number of IBD-ers, about 60 years ago.

Acupuncturists in China have been treating people successfully for hundreds of years. I was in remission for a year with acupuncture.

Unfortunately, I stopped going weekly and flared again. I wasn't able to get to remission again with acupuncture but I also wasn't able to go as consistently to appointments as I did before.

I'd have to agree a lot of folks probably died from it, never knowing or understanding what was wrong.
