Colazal-how long does it stay in your system?

Hi, I was just wondering if anyone knew if colazal stayed in your system after you stop taking it? Or is it one of those drugs that isn't in your system if you don't take it? The reason I ask is I'm breastfeeding while on it and I'm wondering if it is causing my baby to spit up alot. She just turned 6 months old and she spits up after every meal(quite a bit). She has done this pretty much since birth. And at first(when she was younger) the pediatrician said it was normal, but at her 6 month well checkup she seemed surprised that she's still spitting up quite a bit and mentioned that it might be the colazal. Also, she shows no sign that it really bothers her. So, I'm pretty sure its not reflux. But it would be nice if she could keep it down since she is a little peanut and I'd like her to gain a little more weight(she's 12 lbs now, was 6.5 pounds at birth). So I wanted to know if I could potentially skip the colazal for a few days to see if it would make a difference, or if I would need to be off it for longer? I am following the specific carbohydrate diet which allowed me to get off the 6mp I was on. And my goal is to try and get off all meds. But I'm not sure I want to totally stop the colazal unless it does make a difference for my baby.

I was hoping to avoid a phone call to my doctor. He was not really supportive of me stopping the 6MP(he gave me a lot of grief). So I was hoping to do a few days trial just to see if it made a difference and then go from there. I just need to know if a few days would be sufficient or not.

I understand what you're saying about risk/benefits. But I have worked incredibly hard to breastfeed my daughter and my goal is at least a year. I want to exhaust all options before making the decision to stop. I appreciate your input though. Thanks!

Emily - Sorry, I don't have an answer about how long the Colazal stays in your system, but I'm very curious if you were on 6mp throughout your pregnancy and decided to stop to breastfeed? I just started 6mp two days ago and want to get pregnant again as soon as I'm in remission for a little while. I've come to terms with being on 6mp while being pregnant, but it makes me sad to think I might not be able to breastfeed my next child. Did you stop 6mp last June in your last trimester and then have your DD in August and start breastfeeding her then? I've read conflicting information about how long it takes to get 6mp out of your system and am interested how you came to your decision. Has your UC been doing well since you stopped the 6mp simply by following the SCD and taking Colazal?

Oh, and I also want to say, I completely understand what you mean about sticking with the breastfeeding. I was lucky and DD took to breastfeeding right away and I had no pain while doing it. It was easy for us. However, once I started to flare 8 weeks postpartum and started taking a bunch of medication the breastfeeding became more difficult. I too had thought I would do it for a year. I finally stopped after 9 months for a variety of reasons, but primarily because DD was losing interest because we were not feeding as often. I was still struggling to get my UC under control and at 9 months decided to focus on myself to get healthy. I was sad that I didn't make it the full year, but it ended up being the right decision for me in the long run.

Good luck with everything. My DD was a little peanut too for the first 6 months (also 12 lbs) and then right around 6 months she started putting on more weight. They all grow at their own pace. Hope you find something that works for both of you.
