I recently had the stroke prevention tests done where they use ultrasound to see if your arteries are clean, etc. While they were examining my neck arteries, they found a thyroid nodule. The technician took a picture which I will receive in the mail and I am then to take it to my doctor. Is there any link between this and UC?

Yes there is but I'm afriad I do not know the details. Other memebers will hopfeully chime in. My GI said thyroid problems can lead to IBD. He never qualified this statement but he examined my thyroid via an endoscope and it was fine.

Interesting..I've not specifically heard of thyroid problems leading to UC...but there are a few that have thyroid disease/disorders and UC.
Some may be from steroid meds maybe?

Thyroid and hormone ups and downs....could definitely be something there since many women do complain of period/hormone relation to UC flares.

I too have a nodule/cyst around my thyroid and have been constantly checked for thyroid levels..etc. All are good. Hmmm

So, interested to know what the connections could be...must ask my GI when I see him in May.

Sometimes I feel like I am paranoid and every little ache and pain must be related to UC! I was at my gyn several years ago and she told me that there is a link between UC and early menopause (which I went through at 47). I guess ever since then I wonder about what else might be related to having UC. That's why I posed the thyroid question.

it is possible, but i have not heard anything about a link between thyroid problems and UC. I believe UC to be a response to overproducing bacterium in the gut, particularly the colon.

How cool that you want to become a pharmacist. I believe compounding pharmacists are in high demand. It's so good to hear that you want to help educate your patients rather than just filling a script. Best of luck to you!

Annie, I don't have any comment about thyroid issues since I don't know much about that. I just wanted to say that I know what you mean that you want to blame everything on your Uc. I have a tendancy of doing that too. It's a good idea to keep an eye on things that go wrong with your body and if anything does go wrong it's best to persue it. Because Uc may be a condition but it's not the cause of many things - it's your immune system. We don't have normal immune systems and even the smallest thing can send us into a tailspin. Our colons, at the moment, just happen to be the immune systems punching bag!

Thanks for the great perspective, Red_34. I need to remember that it is my immune system that is compromised and UC is only the condition. I must admit I am a little nervous to find out what this thyroid nodule is all about. It's just one more thing medically I have to deal with.

Abstract:
We report the occurrence of autoimmune (Hashimoto's) thyroiditis in three patients with Crohn's disease. Previously, thyroid disease has been described only in association with ulcerative colitis. We review the pertinent literature on thyroid disease in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and suggest that this association supports the hypothesis that autoimmunity is involved in the pathogenesis of IBD. Early diagnosis and treatment of thyroid dysfunction in patients with IBD is desirable because thyroid dysfunction worsens the symptoms and course of IBD.

LOL I know about compounding! If it isn't one thing it's another for sure. Every year I seem to get something different such as one year, I had reoccuring eye infections, then another year repetative (sp?) kidney infections, then it was cysts and ovarian cysts, then warts (uck!), then just recently it was female organ problems.........*sigh* But I truly believe in my personal mantra - take one day at a time and deal with things as they come. Look at the now and not what is to come.

I have multiple thyroid nodules and also UC.   No one has ever told me there could be a link.  Something to think about, but I have heard that thyroid nodules are more common than you would think, it's just that people don't know they have them.

Eight years before I was diagnosed with UC (and about seven years after I was told I had possible rheumatoid arthritis) I was treated for Graves disease of the thyroid. I was wildly hyperthyroid, with a heart rate of 120 - nearly twice my normal resting rate. The endocrinologist told me it was likely autoimmune, and that it was not at all unusual for people with one AI disease to develop a second.

I had a slightly overactive thyroid for 2 years after my son was born. My lastest bloodwork said I was back to "normal" thyroid wise.

CZ - did you have to have treatment for the nodules or do they just keep a close eye on them?

Annie76 - In the beginning of the nodule diagnosis, we tried Synthroid to shrink them, but it didn't work.  I get a scan done every year to see if they are growing, and also every other year a biopsy; which I have to tell you is not fun - but worth knowing the results.  I've had 3 done so far, and am due for another scan.  New ones keep popping up.  One is just a large cyst on the left side, but I have another nodule behind that one, so they have to go thru the cyst to biopsy the one behind it.  I also have one on my ismus, and multiple ones on the right side.  They don't both to check the small ones, they are of no concern.
