intolerance to 5-ASAs. How do you know?

Hey. I was on Asacol, but switched to Colazal about 2 months ago because it was making me very nauseous. For awhile I was feeling much better, but now my stomach is acting strange again. Nauseous, lessened appetite, gas, etc.... not my UC because no bleeding or diarhea, etc.... feeling very good actually, except for this nauseous, which seems reminiscent of right before I got off Asacol. Are Asacol and Colazal made of the same thing? could I be intoleranet to all 5-ASAs? thanks.

I believe that Asacol and Colazol are both mesalamine medications. So is Rowasa, though. Does that seem to bother you as well?

Asacol and Colazal are both 5-ASA's however Asacol is mesalamine and Colazal is Bazalazide. Colazal has a different delivery system and breaks down differently in the colon then Asacol does. I never started getting stomach pain with Colazal until a year or so ago (after being on it for 2 years). I believe the switch from Asacol to Colazal damage my stomach lining in which I have to take a PPI now because if I don't I get severe stomach pain and nausea. You should discuss this with your doctor to be on the safe side.

I'm sure the more veteran members can better answer your question. I can't take Asacol either. When I had my first severe flare, my GI upped my Asacol dose to 12 pills the day. The more I took the worse my symptoms became. It was horrible. I was much better once I stopped the Asacol and just used prednisone to get my flare under control. Since then, I've switched to Colazal. MY GI told me it that it was the same as Asacol, but it breaks down differently in your colon and some people can tolerate one but not the other. I did try Lilada too, which is basically Asacol in one dose and I had the same reaction as I did to Asacol. It's really hard and frustrating when some of these medications give us the same side effects we are trying to combat.
