Severe Pain in the Rectum

Hi;

Can anyone tell me if they too have experienced terrible pain in the *butt?  I have had this happen off an on for several years now, usually wakes me up from a sleep with sheering pain, like a knife...but lately it is happening more often.  I have also been having a long drawn out dull spasm high in the rectum that has lasted now for 3 days.  It is exhausting and painful.  I checked the internet and found what I think I have and it's called, Levator Syndrome.

I think it is part of the colitis because I am in a flare right now and it seems to be related. 

Am I alone in this or has anyone else experienced this?

solomino, I am not sure if I have experience the exact same thing as you, but I have had a terrible sharp pain in the rectum before...I mean, it does feel like a knife...Probably the sharpest pain I have ever had...It has happened many times and stops me in my tracks...Thank goodness it has always happened at home so people aren't wondering why I all of a sudden I just stop and hold my breath...It usually last about 10 seconds or so and then goes away...The episodes are far and few between, but like I said, I have experienced that many times...I sure doesn't feel like a gas pain at all, although I know those can be pretty painful, but I feel sure thats not it...

I have experienced pain in the rectum on ocasion, but not the knife sharpness that you are describing. Mine is more of a dull pain that last for only about half and hour at most. Cant figure out what it is

The short sharp pains are referred as Proctalgia fugax. Even healthy people get that and there is no known cause. But if you are having severe extended periods of pain, it should be checked out by a doctor.

I experience what you are, or at least it sounds like it. I up my Rowasa and start using an anal steroid, Proctofoam to be extact, when it gets bad. Anal steroids don't go into the whole system like oral ones do and it really decreases my bleeding.

It sounds as though you're obviously flaring...yes, I get them.

Rectal meds should be in your med regimen.

Where is your UC...throughout or limited?

What meds are you on?

An antispasmodic will help a lot....I use Dicyclomine (Bentylol/Bentyl).

You could consider to make a signature so that we won't have to ask all the same questions to you continually.

Thank you for the replies.  I am new at the board and thought my signature would

show, but it didn't. confused

I have pan colitis which has been in remission for 5 years and has shown it's ugly face in October. I am keeping things under control with Asacol and Salofalk, so far so good.  I am always bleeding but nothing too severe and I just expect to see blood, but these past few days my gut feels so bad and like I said the spasms don't help.

I didn't know that there is something I could take to ease the spasm,,,,I will definately check that out with my dr after the Easter holiday because this dull spasm is not going away and it has been 3 days now and the sharp ones are coming every night.

I've had this for years and have found the only effective treatment to be as follows (difficult to do in public or at work but this condition flares most often at night): Have some advil or tylenol etc and (sounds a little strange but it works) sit on a hard surface with an india rubber ball or a tennis ball (but the harder the better) positioned under your rectum close to the pain. This does not make the pain disappear faster but it makes a fairly unbearable pain very bearable. Perhaps it compresses the nerve or the muscle in spasm I don't know but I can assure you that it's very effective. Doing this you can comfortably read a book or watch television until the spasm subsides. You may have to re-position the ball occasionally. I've found this has turned a very painful situation into one that is quite easy to deal with. Hope this helps!

I don't believe there is a known cure either. I recently had my first colonscopy and the colo rectal doc said "so sorry to hear about this...wish I could help!"

Yes, my doctor has told me this as well... no clear cause and no known cure.
