Can Pain Killers (Aspirin , Aleve) cause ulcerative colitis / chronic colitis?

I took these for many years for back pains . When I was taking aspirin I had regular loose motions(warning sign?) , after visiting India all hell broke loose (nausea , couldn't eat for a year after that) . My doctor in the US did a endoscopy but no colonscopy . I have all the signs of proctitis . Rectal bleeding sometimes , no blood in stool though I was having black stools all these years . Bloating , anxiety , I can sleep only on my left side it helps with the swelling...

Should I see another GI doc?

My doctor said I am fine and depression could be causing my stomach problems but i don't think so..

Anyone out there having similar experience with NSAID's? My asthma/acid reflux/bronchitis/post nasal drip also flares up during colitis .

Aspirin is tough on the stomach. Ibuprofen is bad news for anyone with a sensitive digestion.

Aspirin side effects:

Upset stomach and heartburn may occur. If either of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: easy bruising/bleeding, difficulty hearing, ringing in the ears, change in the amount of urine, persistent or severe nausea/vomiting, unexplained tiredness, dizziness, dark urine, yellowing of the eyes/skin.

This drug may rarely cause serious bleeding from the stomach/intestine or other areas of the body. If you notice any of the following unlikely but very serious side effects, seek immediate medical attention: black/tarry stools, persistent or severe stomach/abdominal pain, vomit that looks like coffee grounds, slurred speech, weakness on one side of the body, sudden vision changes or severe headache.


Ibuprofen side effects:

Generally, folks with IBD are only approved to use aceteminophen (Tylenol).

If I were you, I'd see another gastro doc. It's possible you may have picked up something while traveling abroad. You need some answers.

before travelling to India i was already having the symptoms like rectal pain , black stool , bloating and stress but i could not understand it , yes before my full blown symptoms started i did take lots of antibiotic for bronchitis infection , 60 tablets cipro (2 daily) , was self medicating , did not had insurance and while in india , over there doctors are incompetent , they did endoscopy on me without sedation ! man it was hell...there i was also self medicating , i found out antibiotic norfloxin gave me relief so took it for 2 months...bad huh? medicines are freely available in india and i am also from india and i know water quality is dangerous..

thanks i will seek another GI doctor . when the disease is in remission will it still show up on colonscopy? i am anxious about the procedure...is it very uncomfortable?

I took handfuls of Ibuprofen for my lower back pain for years.  Finally, at age 50, my colon couldn't take it anymore.  I started bleeding and had a nasty colon infection which landed me in the hospital.  The Dr. said my colon looked like raw steak after doing a colonoscopy.

So, needless to say, I am now on Tylenol as well as a host of other meds.
