I have some questions for the people who have gone through the proceedure for the j-pouch. What is the success rate, time frame from first surgery to the last surgery and until normal bm's? I would like to know some perspective from to people who have gone through it and how they feel now. My doctor has me on 6mp currently and said I am a candidate for the j-pouch.

A consultation with a CR surgeon would answer many of your questions better than I, but I will attempt. The success rate for a jpouch is in the 90 percentile. You should visit www.jpouch.org for more comments on that. I opted for a 2-step procedure and had a temp ostomy for 8 weeks between surgeries. The second surgery is usually done by the preference from the surgeon and it ranges from 6 weeks to 3 months between steps 1 and 2. I felt "normal" immediately after the colon and rectum where removed which made recovery a lot easier. Everyone's recovery is different, there are no hard fast rules but you should see improvements in pouch function every 6 weeks for the first few months.
The surgeon in your area who gets the most positive comments is Dr. Garcia-Augilar out of UC San Francisco. If I were in NorCal he would be the man I would see.
BTW- I am in excellent health, take no meds, and am very pleased with the results.

Thx sue.. I found the web site after I post the questions. I am in good health and not malnurished. I have heard of the one step process with a tube in for a week afterwords. I guess it al depends on your owen health.. thx for the doctor info...

You can ask for a one-step and provided you are in good health and haven't recently been on prednisone you would be a good candidate. The surgeon cannot guarantee it but will make the call once you are on the OR table and he/she can see what the state of your colon is.
