canna-fixme...what planet is your doctor from? Sorry, I had to say that. Yes, I have heard about the spit test. Mine used to be long and stringy, as well. I'm sure of the validity to it, but maybe there is something to it. If you feel you may have a yeast problem, you may wish to experiment with an anti-fungal diet for a few weeks to see if you notice improvement. There are a few different ones out there. If you like, I an email you the diet I did, or the website that explains it. If you like veggies (most are allowed), meat/poultry/fish, eggs/nuts, berries and citrus fruits, then you shouldn't have trouble sticking to it.
Of course, candida (yeast overgrowth) can survive in the gut, as well as proliferate throughout the body. Fungus is systemic. Candida overgrowth in your intestine may create a "leaky gut". Toxins and food allergens may then pass through and go to other parts of the body, making you feel sick all over. It can poke holes through your colon wall and penetrate your cells and alter its' DNA. Candida may be one of other fungi living in your body. Fungi produce harmful byproducts called mycotoxins. Antibiotics are actually mycotoxins. The three major mycotoxin-producing fungi are Aspergillus, Fusarium and Penicillium species. They can enter our body through the food we eat (grains/peanuts to name a few), antibiotics, and alcohol and tobacco.
The only way to get rid of fungi, if you have that problem, is to starve it. Fungi LOVE sugar. That is why lo-carb/no sugar diets make some people feel so much better within a few weeks of such a program. They killed it. On a personal note, my doctors ran oodles of tests on me over the 8 years I had UC. Not one found, or suspected I had a fungal problem. After 2 weeks experimenting with an anti-fungal diet, my symptoms improved dramatically. Even when I relayed my success to my then-current GI, he shook his head incredulously and passed me yet another prescription as I headed out the door. I'm not saying all who suffer with UC symptoms have a fungal condition, but it sure peaks my interest when I hear your success stories with probiotics. I think probiotics can be recommended for anyone, sick or not, for as long as necessary, or wish to be on them. Correct me if I'm wrong.
