At 30 weeks pregnant I had a flare. My asacol and pentasa enemas were doing nothing to help, so my doc put me on predlisone. Thankfully it worked and I tapered down and was fine until a couple of weeks ago (5 week postpartum). I'm now on 4 pentasa tablets a day and nightly pentasa enemas. My question is this- is it possible for my flare to run its course without additional/stronger medication? I don't want to go back to predlisone because of all the side effects.

Flares don't typically "run their course" but it is possible that the right combination of meds can get you back on track. How long have you been back on the enemas? Have you seen any improvement yet?

I've been back on the enemas for a week. I don't see any improvement yet...actually my flare seems to be getting worse. I guess a call to my doctor is in order. Thanks for your reply.

Calling your doctors is a good idea but you have to remember too that not all flares are going to respond instantly to the enemas - would be nice though eh?? :) In the past, sometimes it took almost a good 2 weeks before I noticed any sort of improvement. But if you have a large amount of bleeding then a stronger enema or increase oral med might be in order.

I would just tell my doctor I would rather try other things than take Prednisone.  I flared after having my kids too, I wonder if it's common.  I have only been able to calm down the flares with meds.  I hope you can get out of that flare, it is soo hard to be flaring with a little baby!  (I remember nursing my youngest while on the tiolet a few emergency times, what a nightmare!)
