Antibiotics, flares, and Remicade

It seems that the congestion I have from spring pollen is developing into a sinus infection.  Since Remicade patients are strongly encouraged to take action at the first sign of infection, I called my doctor.  He agreed that this should be treated immediately and prescribed an antibiotic (Crackerjack-500 or something like that).

 

My only hesitation is that I have read so many stories here about people who have had their UC triggered by antibiotics, or have flares triggered by antibiotics. 

 

Should I be concerned?

Pessimist, some antibiotics are more likely to cause problems than others. Cipro and Zithromax are two that I've seen most people tolerating.

Are you on a good probiotic? If not you should be. If so, double up on your dosage while on the antibiotics. Take the probiotic at least two hours after your last antibiotic dose for the day so it can work. I've weathered both Cipro and Zithromax with only mild issues using this method.

I'd recommend you check out the neti pot for irrigating the sinuses. It's a great natural remedy that can help you avoid antibiotics. Got alot of press recently when the method was featured on Oprah.

I use the neti pot. It works great. I do not take sinus pills now, I just use the neti. Give it a try.
