Anyone else in your family suffer from UC?

Hi, I ask this question because both myself and my brother have it (although he has now had surgery). He was diagnosed at the age of 25 and myself at 26. My gran also has it, diagnosed about age 35 and had active disease for 10 years then nothing until about 3 years ago when she had a flare and now takes asacol, she is now 86 and my cousin also has it she caught c-difficile 3 years ago and now has UC diagnosed at age 41. So my question is this are there others who have family members with the disease or is it just my family that have got a faulty gene.

No, no one in my family has it but we do have a lot of auto immune diseases floating around. I was the lucky one to end up with UC :(

My mom and my brother were both experiencing similar symptoms but when checked, my mother was diagnosed with IBS. They are still uncertain as to what my brother has, if anything.

My Aunt has it. I think there are quite a few in my family with auto immune diseases though. I am leaning towards maybe there is a gene that makes one suceptable to auto immune and we got this instead of something else. My Mom has rheumatoid arthritis so at least I can talk to her about some of the different medicines.

My Mom had it, she got an ostomy 20 years ago.

Uncle has UC. Brother had Hirschsprung's disease at birth.

My great grandmother had Uc or CD - not sure which since back then it didn't have a name. My mother had CD and I have UC. So I think it's herditary for the women in my family to have it.

My daughter may have it, yet to be diagnosed. Nobody else in my family has any history of IBD.

My gram had uc back in the 60s. She had her colon removed

and went on to lead a very normal life.

I just wish the family had talked about it more.

Started Remicade in April. Have had my 2nd dose last week.

Prednisone 10mg

No one in my family has any autoimmune disease. I won the jackpot, apparently. Graves disease, reactive airway, UC and whatever the heck it is that's giving me roving severe muscle pains this week. Lucky me!

Just me. Although my family's from a village in India (I'm first generation American) and maybe someone did have it but just wasn't diagnosed.

My bro has CD and I have UC. His symptoms were very severe and after a decade of steroids is in remission with Imuran, Remicade, and Lialda. My symptoms are much more mild.

My cousin has Crohn's and my grandfather was booted out of the army for "disentry", so we don't know exactly what he had, but we're guessing it was either Colitis or Crohn's.

I had a cousin die from colon cancer due to polyps when he was 48. I have about 4 cousins with mild symptoms and now their children are experiencing mild symptoms. My brother's daughter has mild UC. My mother has diverticulitis.

Hi Boardies,

Interesting question. It's one my GI asked me too.

I'm from a large family and 2 of the sisters have been diagnosed with UC. She's just coming off an ugly flare requiring her second round of steroids.

She's 8 years younger than I am and had a good run in remission without medication before it returned.

It just stinks how it ALWAYS comes back!
