Just out of curiosity....

Everyone here with UC....do you or did you have a history of drinking sodas.....especially when younger (ie, a kid)? 

This is just an unscientific poll.

Also, what about alcohol?  History, when younger, of "bellying up" to the bar?

Personally, my answers to both questions are yes.

Any response is great.

Gross! I grew up in one of those families that never, ever had soda in the house. Taang was our big thing! Grape & orange. And now, I may have a soda once in a blue moon, with pizza or something. Root beer or ginger ale. I just really don't like soda. But when I do drink it, it doesn't seem to aggravate my gut at all. The alcohol- oh yeah, I spent my entire 20's in a drunken haze, no joke. Alcoholism runs in my family, & I just went with it for a loooong time! then I got pregnant & sobered up. now, I drink a beer maybe once a month- the thought of all the carbonation bothers me, but when I do actually drink, it doesn't bother me.

I drink Sprite now. When I was in college I drank tons of Mountain Dew. I gave up caffeine years and years ago.

We are definitely a pepsi household. I'd prefer rootbeer but diet pepsi is runner up. I think mountain dew is absolutely disgusting. Thank god pop doesn't bother my UC
I'm not a huge fan of alcohol. I'll drink occasionally but alcoholism runs in my family as well and my UC doesn't always agree. Its just better to stay away.

I drink Sprite since it's caffeine free and I like the taste. Before UC I drank Diet Pepsi, D'oh!

As a kid I probably drank a six pack of pop a day. My pedieatric GI was always after me to give it up due to my peptic ulcers. But I was 12. There was no way. Now I hardly drink pop at all. Mostly I drink ice tea and waterd down OJ.

I have never been a big drinker. I was a bartender so I could still be at the bar with everyone but instead of throwing away money and brain cells I took all their money. In my twenties i did drink more than any other time but still wasn't very much.

Tons of Dr. Pepper and Big Red. I loved the stuff and that was all I drank until college. Then I started drinking only water. Then I got UC 2 years after college.

My family only drank soda every once in a while. It was usually either pepsi or coke (depended on which one was on sale :). My parents would always make us drink sprite when our stomach was upset. I've never really been much of a soda person, so I don't mind not drinking it at all after getting UC.
I've never had a drop of alcohol.

I grew up on frozen concentrated juice, typically store brand oj or if we were lucky and it was on sale "5-alive" (like a fruit punch), 2% milk (sometimes we'd add Quick chocloate to make chocolate milk) and tap water. Soda was a treat, for parties and if we went out to dinner (very rare).

I was a big drinker in my 20's, loved to party! I drink about once week now (5-6 drinks) or maybe not at all or maybe one a week......all depends. Thank goodness, drinking has never affected my UC. At least I can enjoy a flipping cocktail!

For soda now I prefer diet canada dry gingerale. I buy a 2 liter a week. Sometimes a diet coke or pepsi.......I try not to have caffeine while flaring.

When I was young I lived off soda, then from 19 to 21 drank alcohol. now I drink nothing but water and 3 to 4 cups of decafe green tea a day.

I was a 7-up kinda girl... and beer. Now both bother me so I have switched to water and tea. maybe try some Vodka coolers in the summer instead of beer.

I do drink soda. Mostly pepsi or sprite. I hate mountain dew. If there is soda in the house than I drink it but if it's not than it's not missed. When flaring the caffeine gets to me but when I'm not it doesn't bother me. I drink A LOT of seltzer (3-4 liters daily) and I prefer it more than soda. But when I hang out at friends houses for parties it's usually soda that is out so that is what I drink.

As for alcohol, I don't drink. I'm also only 17. :-)

I drink diet soda. Pepsi, Coke, Dr. Pepper, Sprite, whatever. After noon I drink only caffeine-free so I can get a few hours of sleep at night. Soda has never bothered me, and when I tried not drinking it I couldn't tell any difference.

I've never been much of a drinker - one or two now and then. Now I might have two drinks a year, usually sangria or something else light.

Not a soda drinker - just never cared for the fizz or all the sugar or artificial sweeteners which are worse. Not a drinker either... only on very rare occasions when I feel like I have to in order to fit in.

I hardly ever drank soda growing up, if I do drink it now I drink Diet Coke.  As far as cocktailing, I've done my fair share.  I'm pregnant now so obviously I don't have the cocktails (beer almost always when I did drink) and on a very rare occasion i'll have a soda now.  It doesnt seem like soda/cocktails bother my stomach (unless I drink too much :).

Hopefully it will continue to be popular enough to completely phase out that dreaded sugar all together (you know, the stuff that rots your teeth and everything eles, Stevia doesn't rot your teeth, or anything eles).

I still won't drink coke (or any other pops) though, that carbonation can be killer on the bones and since I don't have any bone issues I'd like to keep it that way.

I drank a lot of Diet Coke when I was a kid because that's what my parents drank. Then sometime in middle school I started drinking Dr. Pepper and regular Coke. Nowadays though, I ONLY drink soda if it's from the fountain which means I only have it if I go to a fast food restaurant, (I order water at sit down restaurants). At home I just drink Gatorade (something else I've drank copious amounts of since I was a kid) and water.

When I was a kid, I drank lots of Mountain Dew and some Coke. Now, I have a Coke or some ginger ale every once in a while, but try not to drink soda too often. I was never a huge alcohol drinker. I drank in high school and college occasionally...really not very often compared to many others my age. For a few months directly prior to getting UC is when I was drinking the most I ever had...which still wasn't all that much - maybe twice a week, but I would drink way too much every time I went out. I have wondered if that somehow triggered my UC. Probably not.

Someone made a comment about alcohol maybe starting the UC.....I wonder that myself....I don't know that I am or have ever been an alcoholic, but when I was in college and for 2-3 years out of school, when I went out to drink, I drank...lots....maybe that last time did the trick?  Oh well....

scool  Be kewl...Oh, I did read something about sulfates(sulfites?) in red wine and red meat (esp. ground beef) causing flare ups in UC people...so, watch those two...of course, I consume both now and again..

In the dorm at college we took a Coca-cola break every eve ca. 10 PM-- then resumed studying, writing term papers, whatever. I haven't touched carbonated drinks since developing intestinal problems, though, because they contribute to discomfort & urgency for me. I don't miss them. Occasionally I'll have a glass of wine. It doesn't bother me as long as I have some protein to go along with it. In my twenties I drank scotch more often than beer-- to keep boyfriends company, also a bit of rum. Never touch the stuff now. / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC ... [etc.])

Caffeine Free diet Pepsi.  Pre UC it was reg diet pepsi - now I avoid caffeine.  And I drink tons of the stuff! Alcohol is pretty rare - occasionally a glass of wine or a cocktail when I go out to dinner (which happens maybe twice a year!).

Keep in mind, all that carbination will do a number on your bones which IBDers are prone to having early osteo and even arthritis issues due to extraintestinal manifestations of having IBD. "Diet" anything is also a scary thing for IBDers since not only sugar but also sugar substitues especially sugar alcohols (anything ending in "tol", sorbitol, xylitol, ect) can cause gas, bloating and D for healthy people let alone those who suffer with IBD and even IBS.

I drank alcohol for over 50 years also all kinds of pop. now ABSOUTLY no carbonated beverages for last 6 years. I quit the booze about 2 years ago i feel much better now!!!!
