Hey, I'm new to the site, so I guess I'd like to say hello to everyone first and foremost.

I was diagnosed with UC about 18 months ago and up until recently it had been fairly manageable. However, my symptoms have gotten pretty severe in the last month or so and I've realised just how much my condition will impact on my life.

I was just wondering if anyone could help. I have a terrible headache and I've read that aspirin can trigger flare ups. Does anyone have any alternatives to aspirin that might help?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to HealingWell, John. Generally, it's best to stick to Tylenol for pain and fever. Some of us can take the occasional Ibuprofen, but others will flare with it.

Hi, welcome to HW :) I get a lot of headaches and usually I can only take Tylonel for them. But if they get really bad - like migraine bad - I sometimes have to resort to Excederin Migraine. Which I don't like to do because it has aspirin in it but there is nothing worse then that feeling like your head is about to explode so I have to do the trade off. But first try Tylonel to see if it helps. And if you can tolerate coffee, a cup or two of coffee can help a headache as well.

Thanks for the suggestions. Is Tylonel (sp?) readily available in UK pharmacies?

I never knew coffee was any use. I'm away to pop the kettle on as I type!

Hmm not sure if it's called the same thing in the UK - hopefully some of our UK members will chime in. But another name for Tylonel is acetaminophen.

I was getting headaches from my medication, so I swapped to a different one and the headaches went away. It might be something worth mentioning to your GI.,

I got headaches when coming out of a flare last year...I think it was due to the severe anemia I went through. Perhaps if/when you get your symptoms under control and things settle down for you it will get better. I am one of the ones that cheats now and then and takes ibuprofen for occassional headaches/hangovers and joint pain. It does not seem to have much effect on me now that I am in remission but when flaring your gut is obviously more sensitive. There are also some natural remedies like breathing exercises and the like that may give you some temporary relief. Hope you feel better soon!

Excedrine. That stuff is has been a godsend to me.   If left alone my headaches can turn into full-blown migraines. Excedrine is the only thing I can take to get rid of them. Standard Tylenol, asprin, and Ibuprofin dont even touch them.

I was given migraine perscription meds but never used them....

Excedrine doesnt seem to upset my UC much.

My migraines can and will get to the point of excruciating pain, vomiting, etc....so I will take some upset UC over that...the pain w / the headaches is too severe.

Since having a pituitary tumor removed, my headaches are not as bad, but they can still come about. Some are probably related to UC symptoms and exhaustion.

FYI notice that Excedrine Extra Strength is the exact same thing as Migraine formula...different box only.

I took ibuprofen when i got my wisdom teeth out and it put me into a severe flare. tylenol is the best for me!
