Is there always blood?

I have been reading some of your posts and have a question.  Is there always blood with UC and a flare?  I was diagnosed @ three years ago and really haven't had any blood I could see.  I do get diarrhea, joint pains, stomach cramps and pains and exhaustion!  Just curious.

Nope, not everyone bleeds from a flare. I know Quincy states that she has only bled for her first maybe second flare and that was it. I think it depends on the fragility of the colon. Some people bleed easier then others. For me personally, I have always bled. Even when my symptoms are non existant, I always have bleeding to some extent. I think I can count on one hand how many times I have NOT seen blood. I have brought this up many times with my GI and he said just to keep an eye on it - guess he figures I've had this long enough I know what to look for eh? lol :)

Some people don't bleed, some bleed like a faucet. I always have blood when I'm flaring but sometimes I don't notice it.... Like recently I had a little blood on the TP for awhile and I thought it had stopped, but then just now I went to the bathroom and happened to notice that have the stools themselves are actually red, so the blood is just mixing with the stool now. Man. I don't know, I get less freaked out when it's mixed in though- it's crazy when you go to the bathroom and the toilet water is red.

I have NEVER bled. That's why we were all so baffled prior to my diagnosis. I remember when I first started posting on this board, someone told me I couldn't have an IBD because I wasn't bleeding. My GI never mentions it being strange so I don't think anything of it. I can only imagine what it would be like to see a toilet full of blood...

It is bad enough looking at your toilet all the time.  I can't imagine if it was always blood.  Wow. God Bless those who have that to go along with it.  Must be in pain also.

I don't have blood right now and I am in a mild flare. Even when I was in a really bad flare, I didn't have much diareah, I think it is because I have Ulcerative proctitis, everyone is different. I'm glad you don't have blood. (O: Bellski

I have only bled the very first flare before being diagnosed. And I bled a lot. I flare frequently, but I haven't bled since that first time. Weird....

I would always bleed during a major flare, and sometimes in between.  It was pretty miserable.  Thank goodness the bleeding and flares have stopped for going on 2 years now.  My bleeding always came with heavy cramping, which I know we have all experienced.

well, i always bleed and have always bled.

the toilet looks like dark red fruit punch.  like a horror movie.  its all over the toilet bowl and everything.  i can feel it coming out like a faucet was turned on.  gross sorry.

its like that all of the time. i go a lot as well and there is not even any poo, just blood and blood clots and tissue bits.

there has only been a handful of times when there is no blood.

i am also in lots of pain all the time too.  i wish it would stop cuz its killin me.

i puked yesterday while on the toilet cuz the pain was so bad.  here i am spoutin outta both ends just miserable.

so, i have never experienced UC without blood.

I would try the Haldi drinks, they have a formula that is supposed to activate the curcumin(the active form of turmeric) and make it more available or active or whatever.  I also used to take the turmeric capsules and got no results.   I know eveyone is different, but it made a difference in my life, and from what I heard, they have a pretty high success rate with IBD.  Good luck,

I think everybody is different - I usually feel pretty crappy before I notice any blood at all. Your colon can be inflamed without any actual blood coming out or being visible to you (aka in the toliet).  In my current flare, I didn't have any blood for over a week but just felt awful - now I'm seeing the blood. So it can all depend on how long the flare goes on and what shape your colon is in.

I also had a doc tell me that many people have flare-ups but don't see any blood for the whole flare.

I bleed almost all of the time. The two times I stopped was on Pred. but now I have bone loss and I've vowed not to take it again. Kazygirl, I've also had so much pain that I have vomited....but only once. Were do you get Haldi drinks? Is it a perscrip or can I get it at my health food store? Lately, because I've been trying to relax my guts when I'm in the bathroom, my shoulders and neck have been really tight and I've been aching all over. ugggghhhh.

I bleed fairly continuously when Im not in complete remission. I often don't have many other symptoms and I rarely experience much discomfort except for at the peak of a flare.

I bleed every time I have a flare up. It is also accompanied by mucous. Other symptoms of my flare ups: body acne (arms, chest, sides, and back), dry eyes and mouth, back ache, and head aches. I tend to go along for a month or two, then I will have a flare up for 2-3 weeks. I am in the middle of a long flare up as I write. This one has lasted almost 6 weeks, but I had a sinus infection that may have contributed to my weakened immune system.

Hi.....I had severe symptoms without bleeding about 2 and 1/2 years before diagnosis...I do wish my doc sent me to a specialist then.  After diagnosis, I only bled for the first 3 years with flares and most of them I did have bleeding, but eventually the symptoms got more obvious earlier and I treated earlier with the rectal meds.

I hadn't bled in over 15 years until last summer when I had stopped using the estrogen patch (hysterectomy). Wrongo decision..ugh! Anyway, the flare quickly got under control and I've stayed with the patches. What a wonderful summer compared to last year..lol!

I do attribute it to the consistent use of meds and treating earlier and earlier.....

I bleed every time when I'm feeling crappy. Lately I haven't as much though. I'm feeling better, but, there's still blood. It's either blood coated or there's specs. I can tell immediately when it's going to be really bad. It's like I can feel the inflammation. Very very painful. Up until I started taking my entocort I was unable to stand up straight because it hurt so bad. I was halfway hunched over unless I knew someone was looking at me for at least a couple years. It sucked.

And yes, I agree with those who said it's scary looking into the toilet and it looks like someone has been murdered. Gross.

I bled a lot all the time for a very long time which has made me severely anemic to the point where I couldn't stand up long enough to take a ten minute shower.

I'm a little better now. Still working at it.

I guess everyone's different, and it depends on what part of your colon is the problem.

for years I bled on and off, I would get some relief with prednisone but that was tearing me apart(at least that is the way I felt).  colozal helped but only minimally, herbal remedies helped but again only intermittantly, and I still needed steroids. I think the Haldi drinks helped both with my immune system and with the inflammatory process associated with my UC.  (I dont know if that is correct, but it sounds good).  Anyway, I got them at Whole foods markets while traveling on the east coast, I prefer their green tea flavor.  And now order from their web site.  It also has done wonders with my GERD, and I am not sure why??  I have not bled for going on 2 years now, not a drop.  good luck,

Yeah i bleed with every flare Stacey. Pretty major part of UC for the majority of us,
