Hit a Wall

Roller Coaster ride continues for my 23 daughter,We tried every medicine for the last 2 years with only steroids working,opted for surgery on 7/8/08,Good days and bad so far,she hasn't kept solid foods down,As of today they put tube down to stomach,They believe there may be blockage,How can Ya have blockage if u havenot eating anything solid since 7/6/08.Her spirits are ok she still is hanging in there.We were hoping to walk in a UC/Chrons walk 8/9/08 time will tell.Anyone deal with blockages, do they need to back in? .Again, have read posts for long time never posted till recently.She believes she made the right decision, anyone dealing with this illness has to have a thick skin

IThis sounds more more like an ileus than a blockage.  But yes, blockages can occur in the first year post surgery.  I had about 3 partial blockages and they all resovled on their own.  She will learn to manage blockages but I will tell you the best thing to do is 1. stop eating until it passes, 2. drink plenty of fluids, and 3.  walk to keep the motility action going. 

Her first six weeks will be fraught with periods of ups and downs.  Do not get discouraged, this is complex surgery with a long recovery.  I encourage you to go to www.j-pouch.org where you will meet others.  Whether she is having a permanent ostomy, a j-pouch or k-pouch she will find support on that site.

And with you daughter's commitment to the surgery and her attitude she will no doubt manage through the recovery.  I think the recovery is harder on the family than it is on the patient, especially when the patient is your child.
