Just wanted to know what's the average time people on this forum can hold their bowel movements for?

With me I can't hold for more then 10 / 15 sec.
I know it depends on the extent of the disease, but it would be interesting to find out.

Sometimes mine are like 5-10...there are times when the urge hits and I can feel the stool making it's way out, it's always been that way for me, thank goodness it's not everytime though...I HATE this disease!

My retention issues might also have something to do with the perianal crohn's skin tags I have, so NOT fun being a unique case :(

I guess it depends. When my stomach is bothering me from dairy its like I have to go NOW! But usually I can hold long enough to get to a toilet. There was one time when I was on Maui for vacation and we were driving in the middle of nowhere and I had to go soo badly and my parents wouldn't turn around and I just had to hold it. I held it and it came back with a vengeance later...

Interesting question. Sometimes when I'm at home and have to go urgently (within 15-20 seconds), I think, "Thank goodness I was at home for that." But then when I'm at the grocery store with my son and can't go anywhere, I feel like I can get it under control if I stop what I'm doing and take deep breaths and concentrate on relaxing my body. I wonder how much of my urgency is mind over matter sometimes. I know that saying that is like blasphemy in this forum, but that's been my experience.

In case you're wondering why I won't go in the grocery store bathroom, the last time I went to go use it I opened the door and saw a turd on the seat. Apparently some of us having urgency issues and some of us having aiming issues. Ha!

when flaring, about a minute and that includes my pants already unbuttoned and underwear about halfway down. When not flaring and no hemi can hold it for 1/2 hour to a few hours.

right now I'm in the "about 1 minute" camp.... like Beth said, that's with all systems go- the pants down, the toilet lid up....I generally sit with my coffee & paper a little too long, so by the time I reach the bathroom I'm going full speed! Half the time by the time I'm actually sitting on the toilet, the deed is half done! It's basically coming out as I'm sitting. Soooooo....the toilet lid MUST be open at all times! that has truly been the difference between accident & no accident some days!

I used to have urgency but never that badly, I always had a solid 5 minutes or more.

about 10-15 seconds. Even when it's solid! I always have to go NOW. I'm an expert at getting everything good to go by the time I turn on the light and close the door.

I put in about 1 minute because I can't say I have NO urgency since I still do but I can hold it a bit longer then a minute. If I feel I have to go, I can usually hold it until I'm ready to make it downstairs. But on an off day once I feel the urge and if I don't go right away, I start getting horrible cramps.

Ever notice the closer you get to the toilet or restroom, the harder it is to hold it in!!!

i can usually hold mine for about 5 minutes.

I know what you mean, when the toilet is in sight you relax thinking "oh yes ive made it" which seems to make things worse.

Ain't that the truth! Many's the time I've managed to hold it in all the way home from work, and then it's action stations as I hurtle up the stairs towards the loo. It almost seems like it knows that it's more humiliating and frustrating to catch you out on your own doorstep!


For me the urgency time varies. I get a minute or so if I'm sitting up already or walking, but if I go from lying down to sitting, then it's a matter of seconds. Which as many people here will know is why getting up at night is so much "fun"!

about a half a milli-second. hehe

i have to make sure my husband keeps the toilet seat down, cuz one time that extra little second it took to put it down turned into a nice slimy poo running down my leg. (at 3am) yucky.

Ive got about 5 minutes. Usually enough to at least make it to an exit and proper toilet. But mbx5: I totally agree. My biggest issue is red lights where I can see my destination. There is one near work and one near school. I usually skip that last exit because I know I am almost there and can hold it. Then I get the dreaded red light where I can see school and it is excrutiating holding to green, parking, and running in.

Once or twice I've just made it just as the pants come down, but otherwise I can really hold it. I think it's from an early aversion to public toilets. Sometimes I'll be gritting my teeth and grimacing and someone will ask if everything's all right, and then I'll realize I was holding it without thinking about it. It can get quite painful.

FritzyK23 - I know that all too well too!! Sitting at a traffic light "m-fing" it up and down because you can see the local gas station / fast foot place up there but you are sitting a the longest light on the planet!!! There are a few local lights around my home town that I avoid for that reason alone....I fear them.

You know what even tops it after that - when you do actually make it into the restroom ripping your pants off and - NOOOOOOOOOOOO someone is in the only stall!!!! (or there is turd wiped everywhere on the seat - or other words a Train Spotting restroom - you would have to see the movie to know what I am talking about)

Depends on the extent of my flare,  but when flaring full fledged,  I can barely make it afew minutes.....and yes,  as I get closer,  it gets worse!  There are times I run all the way there, and as I'm pulling stuff down its making its appearance....Thank God the seat is already down!!   The worst is being stuck in traffic!!!   That darn red light seems to take forever,  and if youre in a residential area,  really in trouble!!    There have been times I can hardly concentrate on traffic,  its amazing I haven't got into an accident.    It so sucks sitting in your car seat,  cramping up,  trying to clench things to keep it in,  sweating, fidgeting,  swearing, praying,  and then you finally find the closest public restroom to run into,  only to actually make it in time only half the time.   Then  how do you clean yourself up in public????  It sooooooo sucks!!!  **sigh***  (all bad memories here!!)
