Yes cortenemas are a steroid and although they don't get absorbed as much as an oral steroid, are not usually recommended for long periods of time. Rowasa is a mesalamine, the same medication that is the lialda that you take. It is considered safe for long term use. Some people just need the medicine at both ends. I tend to be one of them. Although uncomfortable you'll get used to them and you'll also realize that it is a small price to pay to feel well. If I were you I would not go on cortenemas unless the rowasa stops working. If this is any consolation I've been on rowasa pretty steadily for 10 years, and although I have lots of times where it is a nightly dose, there are many months where I only have to do one every 3 nights. Good luck figuring out what works for you.
