So I am thinking about the surgery thing. I know I have some options left but I just thinking about it you know. Any how my question Is a urinary catheter needed for it?

Yes, a catheter is placed during this or any other major surgery. It would be removed once you're able to move around without too much discomfort.

Sheesh!!!!!  What is it about men and catheters?  The catheter is inserted while you are under anesthesia.  When it's ready to be removed, 1-2 days post op, you barely notice it because you feel far crappier in more places.  It's no big deal.  I would never pass up a life giving surgery because of a catheter.

I posted this very question only a couple of weeks ago on the Ostomy Forum.

I am also considering surgery and wanted to know about the Foley Catheter.

A very experienced surgeon in the UK told me that an alternative in the form of a Subpublic Catheter is possible.

Is that a suprapubic catheter? If so, that's put in through an incision in your belly. I can't imagine why anyone would prefer the additional pain, chance of infection and slight chance of leakage after it heals to having a catheter inserted for a couple of days. Really, that catheter doesn't break anything!

When they rip you up in surgery, the catheter is the least of your worries.

My daughter just had surgery on July 3. She had the foley catheter for 48 hours after surgery. It was a very minor, very quick "oooh" when they removed it. They deflate the balloon inside and it comes out very easily. No pain, no aftereffects, no big deal. And this coming from a kid who hates the thought of pain.

Don't let this be the deciding factor in having or not having surgery.

The issue of catheter placement is typically glossed over by medical personnel. It is unpleasant, but should not cause harm if properly inserted & removed ASAP. A colleague of mine went to the hospital to have gall bladder removed on same-day surgery, though, but was not informed that a urine catheter would be inserted. On waking from anesthesia (as she later told us) she felt that "something had been done to my peepee". That was very frightening to her and shows why medical staff should discuss all necessary invasive procedures with patients IN ADVANCE so that they know what to reasonably expect. / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC; currently on 3 Colazal daily for maintenance of remission)

the catheter isn't fun or anything, but it's nice to have at first, you dont' want to be up and down to go pee, lol. And you will be on pain meds and such when they take it out, also some people ask the dr for a valium or something before if they are worried about it alot. Think of it this way, the pain from the catheter coming out is gonna last tops, three minutes, the pain from UC is gonna last for life!

Apparently your symptoms of the UC are not bad enough to constitute surgery.  If you are allowing a minor procedure, equivalent to getting an IV, to be the deciding factor in a major abdominal surgery where the outcome is the permanent loss of a major body organ, then you can't be having that rough of a time with UC.  I had BMs with UC that hurt far worse then a catheter not to mention the pains and cramps in my guts.  Having one in has no pain associated with it so if you are truly in need of surgery you are basing your decision on a two second pain (the removal, and it is not that bad).  This is probably not the best way to decide such a serious surgery.

Um, shouldn't the catheter be the least of your worries? I mean, you will have had an entire organ removed! I haven't had surgery (yet), but I'm pretty sure the pain from abdominal surgery will be a lot worse than the catheter removal. That should definitely NOT be your deciding factor for surgery.
