I just had my tonsils removed at the end of June...let me just stress this. I would NOT recommend eating very much dairy the first few days. Your doctor may also tell you this, but I was on heavy doses of liquid vicodin for pain (which you will want!!!) as well as steroids for inflammation and antibiotics. After my surgery my sister and my boyfriend (god bless them) got me an ice cream sundae thinking it would make my throat feel good. Well, I had a few bites...because honestly after surgery all you really want to do is lay in bed and sleep. Well...about
30 minutes later I was running to the bathroom getting sick because the dairy didn't react so good with the vicodin and everything else I was on. And let me tell you, getting sick right after you've had your tonsils removed is NOT what you want to do! I got sick 2 more times that night (probably from the dairy) which made my throat bleed a little, nothing too bad though. It sounds much worse than it is. There wasn't much blood and it stopped after a few minutes. But everyone thinks that you get your tonsils out and you get to live on ice cream for a week when that may not be the best idea, after my experience I stayed away from almost all dairy while I was on vicodin.
I did however have a little. I pretty much lived on Broccoli cheddar soup from Panera. I think I had that (at room temperature) almost every day for at least a week and a half following my surgery. Although the few days right after I couldn't eat anything, I think I had popsicles and that's about it. You could try mashed potatoes. I tried mac & cheese on about day 4 or 5 and couldn't even get those down one noodle at a time. But everyone's body will react differently I'm sure. My doctor said that my tonsils were huge and they had to remove a lot of tissue.
Hopefully this helped a little!
