Can't Tolerate 5-ASA Oral Medications but ok with Rowasa?

Hi All,

   I just wanted to know if there's anyone on this forum who can't tolerate the oral 5-ASA's such as Colazal, Pentasa, Dipentum but rather can take and benefit from Rowasa enema's?

It would seem odd if an intolerance of 5ASA meds were only oral and not rectal. It's possible if one were having symptoms of oral 5ASA, the dosage might be too high or too low.

Symptoms....what were you having with te 5ASA meds?

Have you tried the suppositories?

Have you tried the enemas in the past?

   I took the 5-ASA drugs about 4 years ago and they caused me severe watery diarrhea and probably made my UC worse than it was.  My doctor now wants to try Rowasa, thinking that it might not affect me the same way.  Just wanted to know if anyone else was in a similar situation?

In the beginning of my intolerance, I was unable to handle the oral mesalamines but did fairly well on the rectal. Then over time, I developed a true intolerance of all meslamines - oral and rectal. What symptoms are you having at the moment?

Oral 5ASA give me a host of stomach issues because of their aspirin-nature. Whilst the drug is not broken down in the tummy there is a reaction relating to the aspirin-like make-up of the drug on the stomach's lining. (It's actually to do with the ingredients of the 5ASA's preventing the breakdown of the drug in the tummy)

I'm fine with rectal 5ASA's as they do not contact my stomach!

Red,

   I am having a flare up again of my symtoms, the usual blood, mucus, going to the bathroom about 6 - 8 times a day, urgency.  Doctor wants to try something else in order put it into remission, looks like I should give Rowasa a try.

Definitely try them. I would suggest you try the 2g initially.  Less med, but in a liquid that will reach/treat the sigmoid as well.
