I was just wondering....my GI doctor has me undergoing a yearly colonoscopy. I have had UC for ten years. Do all you UC sufferers have them yearly?

After 10 years they are yearly but it obviously depends on symptoms at other times.

Yeah, It's supposed to be yearly after 10 years, some doctors say after 8. When I was first diagnosed it felt like I was having a camera stuck up my butt every couple of months, it was terrible. I'm going on 8 years now and I just had a colonoscopy done a few weeks ago because I hadn't had one in three years. Personally I'd rather have some sort of scope yearly just to be sure things are looking okay and not cancerous, but I'm paranoid.

I am supposed to have them yearly, but we alway wait until I'm doing relatively well, so it's more like every two or three years.

My Gi told me it should be yearly, when I was in a flare. But, now that things are going well, she said every 2 years.

There was no waiting 10 years for me. Yearly for 2 years in a row - that sounded to be the standard from my GI. Once per year (although I will be undergoing 1-2 others for the Army/VA before my next one from my GI).

I was also told yearly but I've only been dx'd since May 07, but I know I've had it since 2003...so I'm doing the every 18 months to 2 years route although if I cannot control this stubborn flair soon I may ask for one very soon to determine exactly where the blood is coming from and how bad it is or is it not.

I go yearly. A couple of years ago I had a whack Dr who said "we can let it go to two years". I was worried to death so I scheduled it yearly anyway. Two years seems like a long time with the symptoms we have. Besides, I love whatever that is they dose you up on before the test. Just kidding. I am not drug seeking & if I were, colonoscopies wouldn't be the way to get them . . . . too much prep.

I'm heading for the 20 year mark this coming January....I got one at diagnosis, one the end of the first year and then every three years. I wouldn't have one every year if all the biopsies came back unremarkable regardin cancer/precancer or if I don't have a predisposition for polyps.
A c-scope has risks as well....I wouldn't have one unless I need to.

I havent had one for 5 years but he says its time. I hate the prep and I am not paranoid about
it. I saw my heart doctor the other day, had been three years, needless to say he was on my butt. If I feel ok I just cant make myself go to the doctor. my bad.

I go every two years, I think. Although I've always had UC I was only diagnosed a couple of years ago and just had my "check up colonoscopy" at the beginning of the year. All the irritation from the prep and colonoscopy made me flare really bad. I'm not look forward to my next one in a couple of years. =(

When I participated in the drug study for Asacol before it was approved, I had a sigmoidoscope every few weeks.
(You're welcome).

It also depends if one has Pancolitis, as when the entire colon is affected colonoscopies should be yearly according to most protocol...
The last 2 GI docs I've seen both said I did not need another scope and its's be about
a year and a half...I was quite surprised and did not want to argue with them; the last opinion was from a well known and regarded GI doc who head's up GI at a teching hospital.
