I am going to apologize in advance for being graphic! turn

I was just diagnosed in Aug with UC

I typically have VERY heavy periods - especially alot of clotting

I will pass clots that are large - quarter size for a few days

(I know...I''m sooooo sorry!)

Here is my dilemma:

I usually take Motrin IB during my period since it helps with the clotting and menstral cramps

Eveyone on this site talks about not taking ibuprofen with UC

I am not having any bloody diarrhea now

Do you think it is okay for me to take ibuprofen for a few days during my period??????

I've never experimented with taken anti-inflammatories since being diagnosed, and I used to depend heavily on Alleve for period cramps. Right now I'm not using anything for the pain, but I would suggest asking your gyno to prescribe a stronger painkiller that isn't an anti-inflammatory. I was just using hydrocodone for a torn calf muscle and for gallbladder surgery recovery, and it works pretty well. Its strong stuff, but if you just need for a couple days every month, it might not be a big deal.

I think you'd better ask your doctor. I can tell you that I used to take Aleve for migraines near/during my period, and I believe that was one of the causes of my UC flare. I also get worse UC symptoms during my period (e.g.. heavier rectal bleeding), and have heard the same from others on this site. Maybe there is another option for you instead of ibuprofen.

What medicines are you taking for your UC? How far up the colon does it extend?

ibuprofen was the only thing I ever took for pain. when I went to my dr a few months ago he told me NOT to take it that it can cause a flare up. maybe you should call and see what your dr says.

When I was having periods, I had to resort to Darvocet for the pain. I had such severe cramps that sometimes that didn't even help. But definately call your doc to see what he/she suggests because as a Nsaids can promote intestinal bleeding.

I used to get awful period cramps, but since drinking chamomile tea daily (because it's a natrual anti-inflammatory) for my IBD, I no longer get bad period cramps, often I don't get any at all, then I found out that chamomile actually aids with menstral cramp issues and if you drink it before bed it helps you sleep too.

I have had UC for 10 years and I have only taken a motrin once.  Once was enough for me!! My intestines were in total spasms and they just HURT!  I am 39 and done having children so I went to my gyno about bad cramps and slight flares during my period.  We decided that I was a good candidate for a vaginal hysterectomy.  It has been two years! That was the best thing that ever happened to me!!!!!!!!  The only painkillers my doctor will allow me to take are Vicodin for a very short time period.  Anything with a "cet at the end is bad for UC.  I hope you find some pain relief!

I like the Pamprin in the blue bottle - no NSAIDs, but has something else that works well for cramping.

Good luck finding something that works for you!

I also take Pamprin. The blue bottle is acetaminophen - i.e. Tylenol. It works okay for me, but might not be strong enough for severe menstrual cramps.

I take Aleve on the first day of my period b/c I get really bad cramps. I also take it for migranes b/c it's often the only thing that works for me. I've had 2 GIs okay it for me to take a few times a month...not every day or very often. I would ask your GI.

You don't have to apologize for being graphic. =)
