You are so right about your husband, dakotagirl! We have been married 47 years and both taking small doses of medications has helped keep us sane, together, etc. Exercise works wonders but neither one of us can do yoga or much exercise. I used to walk every evening after dinner for about 20 minutes - that was very helpful but my knees are too bad now.
As for getting addicted - yes, that could happen, unfortunately. Sometimes we have to weigh one against the other. I am not concerned at our age but would be if younger. However, you said your "problems" run in the family. Me too! I saw my Mom actually "go to pieces" in front of me because she refused to take what she called "nerve pills". She did not want to get addicted! I don't know what she was on - I think Paxil. It sure helped when we could get her to take it. She lived to be 92.
Good luck and talk over your situation with a doctor or therapist you trust - that is the best way to approach it. I tried Lexapro and a couple others but felt too "dopey" - Xanax works fine! Here (at least) I cannot get a prescription for more than doctor recommended for 20 days and I have to pick up the prescription in person. It is well regulated.
