Went back on my Asacol

Ok, I'm over 50 and I am having an over 50 moment here.   When I posted that the doc took me off of my asacol and upped my canasa to twice a day, someone highly advised me to slowly get off of the asacol and not do it cold turkey.  Did I listen?  No!  I think that is one of my problems w/ my continued cramping, D, etc.  no blood thank you God!  Anyway, teaches me a lesson!  Started back on my asacol yesterday - we'll see.  Such a wonderfully crazy disease!

I had called my gi and talked w/ his nurse and told her I wasn't seeing much improvement. She talked w/ the doc and he advised to stop the asacol and do canasa twice a day - so I did. Think it was a mistake so I started back on them (my decision) yesterday to see if it helps.

My GI told me that it takes about 3 months for Asacol to start working. That was my experience. I've been on the max dose (4pills/ 3times/day) since June and am pretty much back to pre-UC form.

gigi..how many asacol are you taking now? Try an initial dosage of no more than 6 (3 twice daily)..and increase after a month if you need to.

Tressa...Asacol starts working immediately, it may not improve symptoms radically for 3 months. The healing process takes a while.

Quincy, I am taking what the doc initally perscribed which was low 1 pill 3 times per day. So that is what I am doing.

wow...maybe you weren't improving because the dosage wasn't high enough. At least 4 daily seems a working dosage..2 twice a day.

If you don't improve, ask the doc to consider increasing...your UC symptoms seem higher than what the Canasa can deal with.

That's too low a dose, I agree. (I think we talked about that already, didn't we?).
If you're suffering I would slam it with 9-12/day

BTW, when I got asacol the first time (special FDA protocol for study) it started working immediately. Otherwise I was being told surgery was probable...

you don't need a high dosage to start...increasing as needed will find the optimum dosage without the side effects such as diarrhea or bleeding that could have one believing it's UC symptoms.

I thought 6 a day was maintenance on asacol

6 is my maintenance amd treatment I guess...basically, it's the constant, and I treat flares by increasing the rectal meds and then tapering to maintenance.

I was only once up to 8 asacol daily for about 4 months...that's in 20 years, not bad..
