Switching from Lialda to Colozal - Left Sided UC - Plz advise

Hello All,

Today i went to my GI to discuss about my UC - flareups.
Currently I have a mild flareup.
I'm taking Lialda 4/day and Canasa daily.
My GI recommended to start with Colozal from tomorrow.
Is there anybody who is taking Colozal here............
Did you guys noticed any side effects with this medication?
Your responses and feedback will help me in understanding about Colozal.......

Colazal is mainly used for left sided because it reaches further down into the colon then Asacol or Lialda sometimes. Asacol and Lialda are designed to be released at a certain Ph level and if you don't have the right level, it may not dissolve properly to allow even distribution. Where Colazal is specially designed to release on the left side. I was on Asacol for many years when it stopped working for me and my GI switched me to Colazal. At first, I had an increase of symptoms, headaches and an out of it feeling. That lasted around 2 weeks and then I noticed a huge difference in my symptoms - complete turn around.

How long you are in remission?
Asacol and Lialda never kept in proper remission.........

Pb??? Did she reply to your thread? It put me in remission for about a year or so and then my daughter gave me a stomach bug that made me flare and I never got back into remission which is why I had to end up on an immune suppressor. I hope it works for you too :)

We too switched from Asacol to Colazal, when the Asacol diidn't seem to be holding. Didn't notice a difference. Good news is that there were also no noticeable side affects. So, perhaps it will be your lucky one! Dr. thought that it was actually better for those with left sided UC, for the things already mentioned.

     I was switched from Asacol to Colazal about five years ago or so.  My UC is located just in my rectum and the doctor thought Colazal would work better for me.  I haven't had any adverse reactions to it.  I do still get flares though.  So not sure if it keeps you from flaring.  I guess some people have better luck with it than others.

Hi, I was on asacol which didn't really work for me. I'm on colazal now and it's been great. I haven't noticed any side effects from it. Any side effects I do get, I attribute to the other medicines I'm on like prednisone. I hope it works for you!

Colazal was my break-through med! My gastro put me on it in 2003, and it has helped me more than the older 5-ASA drugs. However, I cannot stay on it at full dose for longer than 10 weeks-- because my eyelids start to puff up/itch. Be sure to drink plenty of water daily while you're taking it, and you'll likely do well. It can also help to take an occasional Rowasa while on Colazal-- to boost healing in the sigmoid colon & rectum. Good luck with your switch! / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC; currently on 3 generic Colazal daily for maintenance of remission)

      Has been some time since posting:  

      I, too, take colazal  Have been on it for over two years now:  asacol did not work since it came through me

      in the whole state, never dissolving  and dipentum only worsen the problem

     Do have chills a lot:  believe a side effect.

      Asked my doctor about the new medicine, Lialda and his comment  was:  let's not rock the boat:  the colazal is

     working:   I like the idea of taking a pill once or twice a day vs  9 a day on colazal.   I also take imuran along with

     colazal.  Also am on two caltrate  vitamin D  and find that this helps a lot   There has been a lot ont he news

     lately as to the importance of vitamin D for over good health and colon health.

     Also have diversion colitis and use canasa suppositories for this.  

     All started with surgery due to diverticulitis with the UC and DC developoing.
