Hi

I have U.C. for about 4 years and had a flare up for almost a year now. First doc didn't want to put me on steroids new doc did and i am having weird side effects. Sugar, &  blood pressure are both low opposite from usual side effects. I am always confused and feel like I am drunk, also feeling very depressed. I have been on prednisone for almost a month. I am on 50 ml a day. I haveto wait for the bleeding to completely stop for a week and then take 5 pills for another week and then start decreasing. Does anyone have these side effects because i wake in the morning with the shakes and my blood sugar level is 65 to 70 not to mention i gained 20 pounds.  i was never one for gettting high so i hate this feeling and with all of this i am getting panic attacks feels like my heart is racing out of my chest.  thanks susie

Yes, that's how I feel although I don't check blood sugar. Very uncomfortable! That's a long time to be on such a big dose, is it working at all? What else are you taking?

hi petty

i started with 6 mg then decreased to 5 then 4 and when i went to 3 i started bleeding again he then put me back up  to 5 and i have been on that for a week i am also on asocal 1600mg daily. he want to take me off of asacol and try lialda

6mg?? thats nothing. I am surprised you feel anyside effects....

Susie, did you mean 60mg, then 50mg, 40mg, etc, using 10mg pills? The weight gain is a pretty standard side effect, and mood changes can also be attributed to prednisone. You might want to ask you doc about trying some rectal meds to help you get off the pred quicker. Also, adding a probiotic would probably help you out some.

I can't comment on the pred, for I've never been on it......but has your doc never had you on any rectal meds such as Rowasa or Salofalk?

Hi Susie, I'm sorry to hear you are feeling like that.

I've had very similar side effects when I've been on a high dose for a prolonged period of time. It's one of the many many bad things about Pred.

The shakes, loss of concentration, dehyrdation, mood swings, weight gain, insomnia, depression are all quite common side effects. What dose are you actually taking, because your posts seem a lil confusing.

Maybe you shouldn't be on such a high dose and instead need to be complimenting the preds with something else?

How are you taking the Prednisone? Do you take it once a day? It might help to divide the doses. I've posted about this on here before. When I take Pred, I have to split it up into 3 or 4 divided doses a day. It keeps it equal in my system. When I took it once or twice a day, I could always tell when my dose was coming due because I would feel really lousy, like my body was crashing. Maybe try the divided doses, it might help some.

hi all and thanks for the info i am sorry i am taking 50 mg daily at once in the morning.
i could deal with the side effects but what worries me is the low blood sugar anyone ever had that with pred. What is a probotic?

It returns good bacteria to our gut, because a lot of us have yeast that has taken over our colons. I'm sure others can explain it better! It's what they talk about is so good about yogurts, but stronger, medicinal.
