Switching GI Doctors

I discovered yesterday when I called my GI that my GI is retiring. With my health plan, when a doctor leaves they replace that doctor with another. So, I don't have to switch. My concern is.... what is that doctor wanting to try? Is he going to switch my meds? I have a lot of questions and am curious at the outcome. Does any of you guy have any idea on what I should expect? I know I want to check this new doctor out before I choose a different doctor, I already have an idea on which doctor I want if I don't like this one. But I just feel like I'm on shaky ground. I see my reg GI 1 more time on New Years eve, then he's gone. :(

I had the same thing happen to me, my doctor, whom i loved retired.  They tried to pawn me off to a Nurse Practitioner in his office since they are so busy, but i drove over 2 hours to see this doctor in particular (because he was so good) that i didn't feel it was worth my time and gas money to drive all that way for a NP (don't get me wrong, NP's can be great too, but the distance just did not justify it for me).  I researched the other doctors in his group and called the office manager and told her the situation.  They were happy to get me in with the doctor i wanted.  My new doctor did end up meeting me and going over everything from scratch again and he did end up switching some of my medications around (not successfully though).  Hopefully you will have a good transition.

I can empathize! Changing doctors or dentists is not always what we what to do, but other circumstances intervene to force the change on us. Last year my very competent & personable internist decided to give up practice to become medical director of a large suburban hospital. A few years before that it was my ophthalmologist who chose to relocate to another state after his wife had their 2nd child and they wanted to buy a house at reasonable cost. You can look into the new gastroenterologist's education/training & hopefully ask whatever is on your mind at your 1st meeting. Then you'll have a better idea whether you want to stick with that office or move to a new one. Good luck! / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC ... [etc.])
