Crazytrain, you say that symptoms went away when you started probiotics. You cut out meds, then?
Yes, I stopped 5-ASA which Id been on for 7 years. But it seems its not so simple. I have read about
people on this forum who say they've takin probiotics and even VSL#3 and it had no effect.
Its such a mystery to make me wonder if we even have the same condition. Maybe probiotics work only for mild/moderate UC - I have no data about
that.
But then again - diet, other medications, immuno-suppresants - who knows what effect this has and maybe it prevents some people from getting better with Pro-Biotics. Also it may take some time for them to work and people may not give it a chance due to adverse effects. The VSL#3 trial was for 9 months.
The developers of VSL#3 did a placebo-controlled random trial with 40UC patients - and claim 77% remission rate. This must mean that the vast majority of people on this forum belong to the hard cases that can't be solved with probiotics - that 23%. Its the only logical conclusion, and it makes sense - the poeple who are inclined to post on this forum might have a hard case to solve.
Final thoughts - VSL#3 is a very large dose but it still may not have enough bacterial strains variety. Ive read people need to almost customize which strains they have. I boosted my total number of strains to 16 - your typical probiotic might have 2-8 strains (VSL#3 has 8)
