Folks I survived my trip with no accidents in my pants! However, I was stopping and peeing all the time, come to find out I have UTI and my doc is recommending sulfa drugs and asked me if I'm allergic to them, I said no. I was taking sulfasalsazine (for UC, I'm on nothing now), is this in the same family? Has anyone had the UTI and taking antibiotics for it? Thank You.

I'm glad you had a good vacation.  Sorry about the UTI.  I am the queen of UTI's, I get them a lot.  Bactrim is a common antibiotic used to treat them and it usually is good for UC.  I've also used Cipro without much trouble.

I'm taking Mylan it says on the capsule, but its call Nitrofurantoin Macrocrys generic for Macrodantin. Have you taken this? My doc said I would be feeling great in no time. Thank You for the response, I just wish I would have addressed it before vacation, but I didn't know anything was really wrong, I thought it was inflammation from the rectum pushing on my bladder. I need to be a little more in tune with my body I guess.

my wife had a uti a couple weeks back and bought a cranberry supplement from the health food store which the owner recommended. her symptoms disappeared within 2 days and that was the first time she has not had to go get antibiotics for it. it's called D-Mannose with CranActin by Solaray. it'd be worth a try.

Yes, I just had a UTI last week for the first time ever. I took a 3-day course of a sulfa antibiotic (brand name: Bactrim) and it cleared it right up. Mine wasn't very serious, so your doctor may prescribe a longer course. While I was on the antibiotic, my UC symptoms were much better than usual. I would do what your doctor says because untreated UTIs have the risk of spreading to your kidneys and you definitely don't want to chance that.

I'm on a 7 day course, 2 pills a day. I'm not taking any UC meds at the time. The asacol, colazol, pentasa all made me nervous, the sulfasalsazine which worked the best out of all, made me feel tense I would say. Like I couldn't relax like I wanted, I tighted my jaws a lot. Can you think of any other type of meds which are different from these I can ask my doctor I could try?

wouldn't you want to try natural alternatives rather than going straight to antibiotics each time? "antibiotic resistance?"

Apple & Eve Natural Cranberry juice is very helpful toward maintaining healthy ph-level in the urinary tract. That's the best way to cut risk of UTIs-- drink plenty of water daily + about 4 oz of Natural Cranberry. Some members writing here have posted in the past that they use cranberry capsules from the health food store in place of juice because it agrees better with their stomach issues. I had a really severe UTI a few weeks ago and also tried D-Mannose with CranActin. My symptoms were gone by the next day, and I didn't even have to take antibiotics. I took capsules that I purchased from Whole Foods, but I believe you can also buy it in powder form. It's definitely worth a try. I hope you feel better soon!

Thank You everyone. No and again, this is before the UTI meds I get this way of pain in my upper abdomen , a straight line from left rib to right rib, in the middle and a line across, that's very painful. It comes in waves. I use to feel it when I had to go diarreah, but no diarreah is coming. What is this wave? Cramps? It feels like something is sharp going through, but again, it's only right rib to left rib, higher up by the stomach. I feel like it contractions, if I knew what having a baby was about.

Also, the UTI meds, does it get out bad bacteria in the gut or only in the Vajay jay? Anyone know?

I think it also gets out bad bacteria (at least certain kinds) in the gut, because it's also used for traveler's diarrhea.
