Pic - is this amount of blood normal?

I do not have diarrhea or any pain at all. I just have blood. My doctor said it is normal with UC and Crohn's, but I am wondering what you think. I am on Asacol, iron tablets, and Prilosec now.

Yep, that looks normal for Uc. I have had times where it looked like I slaughtered a pig in the toilet.

I usually have ALOT more blood than that but then I have a ridiculous amount of blood during my flare ups, you'd think I was dying or something! :(

As far as I know, I am not in a flare. I am asking if this amount of blood is normal for remission?

If you are bleeding you are not in remission.

The next course of action would be Remicade. How long have you been on the Aza?

You might want to give the rectal meds a chance if you haven't already - either Rowasa or a steroid enema to get that bleeding under control. Have you ever used these?

Hi All,

I just wanted to add thank you to everyone who's took time to look at this picture, like I did. Where can you find a more caring bunch of folks then us on the internet?? Seriously, I'm so glad I've found you guys. Just looking at this pic helps me b/c I have the same type of stool, unfortunatly, but for us to help each other through this ordeal is so awesome! This isn't my picture or post, but bless the hearts of those who really looked at the picture and help this person out with their questions. I know there's nothing you all wouldn't do for me or anyone else on this forum. I feel good knowing there are other caring people in the world, like myself, who understand the ups and downs of this dis-ease. Way to go team!!!

NostraHistoria, that doesn't look like a lot, I've had way more than that, it's pretty normal. However If you're bleeding you're in a flare. The blood looks bright so it must be from the lower part of your intestine (rectum, sigmoid, etc) It would be nice if you could ask your doctor about rectal medication (enemas, etc.) Rowasa helped me out a lot.

Bright red blood is definately an indication that it is coming from the rectum/sigmoid area and rectal meds can definately take care of that (or at least it's supposed to!). Dark red blood means that the blood is higher in the intestine and black stool/blood is even higher yet or old blood.

could you have a hemmroid or a cut in your backside?  Sometimes if I push too hard I get cuts and they bleed like the dickens.  But I do hope you stop bleeding.

NH...Definitely flaring, not from hemmies or a fissure...considering it's in and around the stool. Looks as mine did when I was bleeding with a flare..different than when I have a fissure..which is more dripping in the toilet after I wipe.
Not to say you couldn't have either, however...but considering you have UC, and if it's consistent...it's a flare..

The inflammation could be higher than where the bleeding is....but considering the stool is pretty formed and the bleeding is quite a bit through the stool, you should be on rectal meds regardless to help while you're tapering off the pred.

How much iron are you taking? Sometimes that would darken the stool and cause some constipation...but that doesn't seem the case.

Are you taking any fibre supplements?

2 tablets of iron. No fiber supplements either. I feel fine, but sometimes at night I get tired.

I would encourage a fibre supplement to help bulk/soften the stool...definitely easier going through an inflamed rectum.

Tired at night seems the norm for many....

What did you go on to get into remission? When you had that flare, did you just have blood or did you have diarrhea and pain as well?

BTW, thanks to everyone who looked at my pic. I did feel a little odd looking at someone else's bowel movement.

For my daughter, the 6mp took awhile, and then gradually improved the bleeding...until it didn't. You might get lucky and it will kick in a bit faster. Behave and take the tests required, so that they monitor your liver/kidney functions. A specific enzyme breaks that stuff down, and it has to be closely monitored.
Loved the photos! I can say that the first one posted didn't look too bad to me...that is a good day in my house, and Quincy's/ Sherry's right, you are not quite in remission. The latter flare photos are also familiar to me, and they are def. not in remission. More blood than stool seems to be the marker that things are getting pretty bad in my daughter's world.
