I have overgrowth of Clostridial Species

Hey everyone,

I just had an organix test done not to long ago that test for various vitamins, bacteria, yeast in the body through urine sample. It's very expensive but reliable and accurate. Well, I always thought I had yeast, but my markers all came back perfect except for one.... I was 130 times over in clostridial species, which is a intestinal bacterial overgrowth, that is deadly and can release awful toxins. Now, I dont see my doc til this upcoming monday. However, he said, definitely no yeast, which is great, b/c this can mimic the symptoms and I thought thats what I had for the last 2 years. This is similiar it seems, but not certain yet.


My doc has never seen this in a patient and can't believe the numbers. He believes this is the root cause of my Ulcerative colitis/proctitis, skin problems, and various other problems, b/c everything else is perfect. By the way, I have had extensive blood, urine, and stool testing done. This is the only markers to be out of range and especially at those numbers. I do have slightly elevated mercury levels, but not too high.

Well, there was an exact marker that showed up on the test to determine this bacterial overgrowth. I don't have my result papers with me. But its 3,4 dehy.... its very long. I will repost later with the exact name, but it indicates that it in the clostridial family. It's really amazing how they determine this.

Ok, so I looked on the internet and theres not much info on this or treatment. Does anyone have any knowledge on this bacteria and treatment. Has anyone ever had this? My doc said will talk about treatment. He said he's amazed though b/c in his 35 years of practice, he's never seen this in anyone. So, please posts with thoughts and suggestions. I will not take anything until I'm knowledgeable about it. Thank you!

They've got information on their various proprietary tests, and what the results are supposed to suggest, a few pages back. Here's the one it sounds like you took:

The specific test result you're talking about sounds like it's for "3,4 Dihydroxyphenylpropionate," which they claim is associated with clostridium overgrowth.

"Bacterial overgrowth" and "mercury toxicity" are two other areas where a lot of quackery collects, which makes me a little suspicious about the test, your doctor, and what's going to happen next.

Clostridium is a family of bacteria. A lot of us know it as the "C" in "c. difficile" infection, where it can indeed make you very sick. But you should have already had stood cultures for c.difficile in the process of having UC diagnosed. Testing for clostridium through urine samples for a clostridium marker is not a usual way to look for it. I would ask a lot of questions about what, exactly, your physician feels that these test results demonstrate. And I would get a second opinion from a board-certified gastroenterologist on any course of treatment the doc suggests as a result of these test results. (Is the doc who ordered this test an MD, DO, or some other kind of doctor, and iin what area is his certification?)

Please keep us updated on this. My whole experience with UC started out as c.diff when I was never on antibiotics. I get c.diff about once a year. I'd like to hear who did this test and what your line of treatment will be. Thanks!

What is an organix test? It sounds like new age alternative medicine, but I'm not from the UK, so I don't know. I do believe that there will likely be a link found between SIBO (smal intestine bacterial overgrowth) and UC. Currently it exists for IBS, and the standard test is a hydrogen breath test. Try reading Mark Pimentel's book on the subject.

     Interesting.  My GI doctor always tests for c-diff when I start flares, which is about once a year.

Freakzilla, I have talked to my doc about different bacteria and probiotics, and he told me that Sacchromyces Boulardii is a very good bacteria that seems to combat Clostridium difficile, one of the Clostridium family.

Hey everyone,

I know it's been about 6 days or so, but I went to my docs appt and he gave me a few options. I am currently on 250 mg of Flagyl every 8 hours for 14 days. We are trying this to see how my body reacts, whether its a positive way, or negative. Either way, we both know the Flagyl will wipe out all the flora in my gut, the good and bad. So, after the 14 days, start up on probiotics, through yogurt, kefir, and taking supplements probiotics too.

My doc spoke with the lab tech who did my study and I have the email response the lab sent to my doc. She said I must take Saccharomyces boulardii, which is a probiotic. So, we will definitely do that once I'm done this course of flagyl.

Also, my doc ordered a stool speciment for c.diff and a few other things on Monday morning before I started the flagyl (I started the Flagyl on Tuesday). We are trying to find out the exact type of bacteria I have in the clostridial species. There are 150 different species. He is not sure which species I have, so maybe the stool speciment will identify that; however, we used quest diagnostics. There are not a great lab. So well will see... It may take some time, but I feel good about this. At least we found something..... Now we have to go further into it! Thanks everyone!

This is definately interesting to me as my first flare started about 3 months after a Cdiff episode. was on antibiotixs for infected poison ivy. Ended up on probiotcis for 2 months till gut and bloated feeling went away. Then one month later the D started, slowly but built for another two months till it was daily. Took another 6 months or so to get diagnosed with UC. But mine all seems to have started this way also. Please keep us informed.

Hi there, I also was diagnosed 3 weeks ago of clostridial overgrowth via the Organix test.

I have been taking herbal approach to eradicating this bacteria. I am taking acetylcysteine 30 minutes prior to candibactin-BR three times a day. I am taking this herbal remedy because I am allergic to metronidazole and vancomycin is to hard to recover your gut flora after. My doctor also started me on sacro-B and VSL#3 to replace the good bacteria and yeast in my body. Since starting the treatment, my symptoms have actually exacerbated. I have been having BM followed by severe cramping. I am told that sometimes the symptoms do get worse before they get better. In all fairness I was keeping the symptoms at bay previously with pepto and ranitidine which I am not allowed anymore. I am hopeful but getting tired of being sick. The organix test also revealed that I do not digest my carbohydrates very well at all, so I am also taking R-lipoic acid three times a day and having biweekly injections of glutathione and vitamin B. I again am a little frustrated but trying my hardest to believe in the science of the medicine.
Note:They do not think that I have C-diff but I have not had any fecal exam to tell me what strain it is. Keep me posted on your progress.
Note: I am already on a gluten, dairy, and egg free lifestyle

Is it definitely a pathogenic strain that you have? Clostridia family fall into the firmicutes phyla, they are often over represented in people with IBD. There's far more to clostridia than c diff. There are good bacteria in the clostridia family too, don't go trying to wipe them out if you don't need to

Why not just send off for a fecal bacterial culture from one of those places others on here have? UBiome or whatever they are called.

Problem here is they are simply testing urine and claiming... - I might be wrong but I'm 99% sure all published IBD studies where they have sampled fecal bacteria and analyzed by gene sequences on multiple occasions show dramatic decreases in many of the Clostridia species. So I kind of doubt there's anything to it at all.

Treating or doing anything to decrease Clostridia species further should technically just makes things even worse - Clostridia are the main producing source of butyrate, which is the primary energy source for your colon cells. They are good with the exception of a few specific strains such as c-diff, botulism, tetanus etc.

I also recommend either Ubiome or American Gut for a detailed stool analysis. I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around how a urine analysis would provide much useful information regarding UC.

My son has about 18 times the overgrowth of Clostridia in his gut and takes smoothies, porous foods, lots of fruits, etc. and drinks about 8-10 glasses of water a day. He is still not having regular BMs but they come our hard in the form of pellets. What is he doing wrong. He also still has pressure and pain after he eats. Would goat`s milk-based Kefir be useful at all or would it add to the problem.Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

This is an old thread, and you don't even say if you son has UC.

I advise you start a new thread and give the diagnosis and current treatments.

This is interesting to me. Early in my flare I began thinking I had a candida overgrowth and took two successive bottles of S. Boulardii (alternated brands in case one was better than the other). I didn't have a relief of mucus or blood though. I am still interested in this.....maybe I will spring for a test myself.

I wouldn't recommend purchasing anything recommended by a spammer who doesn't have UC!
