just quick question bout diareaha

i havent had diareaha before while havin colitis , altho last 2days i have had, i was goin to get some tablets for it but the pharmistis said you cant take them with inflamed colon so she said not to take them... how else do i stop it? as it so painful havin pain of tht , plus colitis and 2 top it period pain.

ive only been given co-codmol for pain, but dont seem 2 be doing anything.
when u say Have you tried using fiber? Fibercon, Benifiber, etc? - im not sure wot that is?

Are you in the states?

Fibercon and Benefiber are fiber supplements found in most pharmacies. Fiber can help bulk up the stool which in turn will decrease diarrhea.

And never ever apologize for sounding stupid! You can't learn these things if you don't ask right???

Is the bleeding from hemis? a fissure?

If you are bleeding from the colitis, you need to be on more than 4 asacol a day.

Is the blood mixed in with the stool?

If it is not and just on the tp or coating the stool you can usually assume hemi's or fissures.

Okay - with the bleeding, let's forget the fiber for now. Have you called your doc recently? If not, now is the time. Tell him/her exactly what your symptoms are: How many times you are going to the toilet per day, How many of them are at night, How many of them have blood, Where the pain is, What type of pain it is, If you are having urgency.

My thoughts are that you are not on enough meds to stop this flare.

What enemas were you on? What problems did you have with them?

Okay - you are describing urgency - the sudden need to dash to the toilet. Quite often with a severe flare bloody mucous is all that I pass. This is a reason to call your doctor ASAP!

15-20 times a day is too many. This is not something you can control by yourself. You need to be under a physician's care right now.

Keep track of your bms. A calendar is a good place to do this. You can show it to your doc with exactly how many times you are going. I use a "U" for urgency, a "B" for lots of blood, a "b" for blood, "L" for loose stools. This way you can actually see when you are improving. A food journal is also useful.

If you haven't already, call your doctor.

1. You are in a serious flare.
2. You need more aggressive treatment. Certainly a higher dose of Asacol, perhaps different or additional medications.
3. I understand your specialist care is rationed. I know it's a drag, but you need to be seeing the GP often enough that they all know you. If they change something and it doesn't work, go back.
4. It's unfortunate that you decline to use enemas, because those could help a lot with the urgency. The inflammation in UC alway starts in the rectum, and that is the last place that heals. I understand they're unpleasant, but if they help, they're a lot better than spending your day in the loo in pain.
5. The more you know about your condition, the better you can advocate for yourself. Read the information here, on the Crohns/colitis foundation website, books, etc.
6. Generally when you're in a bad flare, there's no point worrying about what sets you off. Everything sets you off and nothing sets you off. While some of us can identify foods or activities that trigger symptoms, flares can also come with absolutely no trigger. The hardest part of this diagnosis is for us to come to an understanding and acceptance that we have a chronic condition. The only absolute cure is surgical removal of the colon, which can have its own challenges. Medications can help us, but we have to be dedicated to taking them every day. As your flare recedes, you may begin to be able to identify some things that seem to always make you feel worse. When you're going 20 times a day, there's absolutely no way to tell. Right now you need to concentrate on medical treatment to start getting things under control.
