confused  Hi all,

I have been recently diagnosed with UC following biopsies taken during a colonscopy. Have been suffering on and off for over a year. Was put on Dipentium, while awaiting to see a GI. Am having a flare up at the moment so have just been put on 20mg of Prednesole aswell as an increased doe of Dipentium. I am a little confused as I dont suffer with diarrhea as most people posting on the forum. I usually have constipation with all the other symptoms aneamia, blood, mucus, nausea, some vomiting, fatigue, alot of pain on left side of abdomen as well as cramping etc. I am wondering do anyone else suffer mainly constipation with UC.

ask your doc if Miralax would be ok to take. Also might want to include some form of tolerable soluble/insoluble fiber supplement to your diet to increase BMs.

I have Ulcerative Pancolitis and suffer from constipation. Usually the beginning of a flare for me is marked with days of constipation and server cramping as a result. Usually all down hill from there for me. I started drinking Metamucil and I find it helps. :)

when i was first diagnosed with proctitis, I usually suffered from constipation, and all your other symptoms.....no D. My GI told me this is usually common with proctitis and D is usually marked when the UC has spread further into the colon. not sure how reliable this is.

I have Ulcerative Proctitis, and currently REALLY suffering from constipation! Haven't had a 'natural' bowl movement (without laxitives) for over 3 weeks...and only 3 BM's with the aid of laxitives.....my stomach is so bloated and crampy, and I'm on the verge of taking myself to hospital because I can't stand it much longer....I just took another dose of milk of magnesia 6 hours ago, and nothing!

Try not to rely on the laxatives for encouraging bms. Make sure you are eating enough foods to encourage the peristalsis in the colon. Make sure you're getting enough fluids/water throughout the day.

One can add a fibre source such as Metamucil smooth or regular to bulk up and soften the stools.

Stool softeners can be added for a while.

The main cause of constipation in UCers is mild or low in the rectum inflammation...which can happen early in a flare or while one is healing from a flare

Rectal meds are important.

Again, I stress to not use the laxatives instead of increasing fibre sources and making sure one is eating enough food. Eating more often will also ensure a better stool formation.

Thanks to all who replied,

It is great to know that others suffer the same symptoms. Am on prednesol with 3 days now (for the first time) thought I was improved yesterday but just as bad today not in as much pain though. Have an appointment with GI on Tuesday. What questions should I be asking her?

You should ask her where exactly is your UC..meaning is it limited, throughout..etc.

Ask for a copy of the c-scope results.

Ask to not be put on a higher dosage of pred...rather to be put on rectal meds..mesalamine instead of steroid.

Please realise it'll take a while for you to feel better....

Did the surgeon put you on the prednesol?

Surgeon put me on a maintenance dose of Dipentum while awaiting to see GI. I was very ill in February/March 08 was hospitalised twice. They didnt do any scopes and said it was a very bad kidney infection and gastritis on antibiotics for 2wks, improved but symptoms did not go away. I went to another doctor was put on more antibiotics he said it might be diverticulitis, and he referred me for a colonoscopy. Surgeon said that bowel looked ok but he took biopsies which showed colitis. He said the GI will do more tests to confirm extent and type of colitis. Have flared up again so my GP put me on pred on tues and increased my Dipentum. I had protitis a few years ago had steriod suppositories for it. Have been aneamic on and off for over 2 years but doc was taking no notice of it just putting me on iron tablets.

Sounds like a frustrating year for you.
