Concerned about my dog - he ate an asacol tablet that fell to the kitchen floor this morning

Otis is a pretty stupid Basset Hound but he is one of my best friends. He seems fine but should I take him to the vet? confused

If he fell to the kitchen floor then I would take him to the vet or at least call the vet and aks them what you should do...if it happens again, you should probably induce vomitting on him.

I doubt it is a big deal but I would definitely call poison control or the vets office or both.

I wouldn't worry about it if Otis is doing fine. If you are worried though, you can always call the vet and ask.

Oh ya DUH LOL, I mis-read, the pill fell to the floor not the dog, I was kinda wondering if the dog fell to the floor after he ate the pill why someone would even ask if they should call the vet LOL. Typical brain fart on my part.

Basset Hounds really are pretty dumb dogs, haha. My parents have one named Clanci and she's so cute and funny but definitely not the brightest bulb in the box. The other day my mom found her chewing on her insulin bottle, thank goodness she couldn't get it open or break it!! She's also eaten shishkabobs (with the stick), entire packs of gum (wrappers and all), christmas ornaments, carpet, anything she can reach from the kitchen counter, and worst of all... her favorite snack is her own feces skull   Needless to say I do NOT allow her to give me kisses.

Let us know how he is doing - I would check w/ the vet just because I know some normal human meds are bad for pets, like tylenol.

It happened to me and my Border Collie. I brought him to the vet and they made him vomit. I hope your dog is okay. Mine ate two Asacol pills though. Better call your vet though. I panicked and rushed to the vet without calling, because I was so worried about my furboy.

I found a half eaten asacol on the floor a few weeks ago... My stupid Lab / Boxer mix (Sam) only hate half....guess they taste bad. He is fine....and no more or less stupid than he was before he ate it :)

My cat ate his toy once. It was funny when the long string thingamajig came out his butt and he waved it around trying to get it out. Of course it was a bit messy too.

your dog obviously can't read. It explicitely is written on the Asacol bottle: Do not crush or chew! Just kidding!

Joy, my chihuahua loves to "gut" his plush toys and sometimes swallows that fluff. Although I observe him and collect the fluff after he is done "killing" his toy, he sometimes poops it out in long strings and sometimes needs help pulling it out ... ewwww... but I guess that is true love for your pets, right? tongue

My 85 pound Boxer got an Asacol tablet. I called the animal poision control. They told me she would be fine. I think I tried to induce vomitting but couldn't get her too. She was fine. I give her thyroid meds every night and accidentally stuck my pill down her throat without thinking. I felt so bad.

I think they give dogs Mesalamine when they develop UC, so shouldn't hurt him.

We had a shizhu and I think they might be the dumbest breed out there, he would eat the kids crayons, wrappers and all, nothing like cleaning up rainbow colored dog poop. He also liked to chew on baseboards (ouch eh, how'd you like splinters comming out of your butt?), that didn't go over very well with us, especially when we spent plenty of money on dog toys and treats for that dog.

Yes the puppy will be fine. Vets prescribe mesalamine and sulfa drugs to dogs and cats. You can actually buy sulfasalazine from pet supply places.

If you get sick easily then don't read any further!!!



I had a dog that ate the silicone pouch he found in a box of new shoes. He was just fine. Also my current dog....*looks over at him*.... ate most of a dead opossum complete with maggots. He threw that up on the way to the vet. That was quite the scene on the side of the road as I jumped out for air. The vet laughed and said he would be fine. A year later he ate a dead bird and a stone. He threw that up too. *shakes head*

Ha....my dog has done the same exact thing, except for the stone.  He came walking towards me with a wing hanging out his mouth one night.

I hope your dog is okay, EdwardC.  I've often worried what would I do if my dog ever ate one of my pills.

 be careful helping Joy out with the stringy fluff. my friend had a bearded dragon that ate a string and when she helped him out his intestines came too. fluff is probably not as big a problem but beware. :x

Dogs develop UC?  Didnt know that...

I would learn how to install a doggie door...IN A HURRY.

my bulldog has ate everthing that falls to the ground, does not even come close to the 5 second rule, pentasa, imuran, the purple pill, my girlfriends panties,oops nothing ever happens to him!

Actually, anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive drugs (drugs that suppress the immune system) such as cortisone-like drugs (corticosteroids) and the immunosuppressive agent azathioprine (imuran) generally are reserved for dogs in which colitis is strongly suspected to be immune-mediated in nature based on microscopic examination of biopsy specimens obtained during colonoscopy.

It's amazing what animals can eat and come away from unharmed. One day I came home and noticed in the corner of the room a brownish pile... Of course I assumed she had an accident, but when I got closer I realized that it wasn't feces, it was in fact a whole black sock that she had swallowed and then puked up, but it didn't even have a single hole in it. No idea how she managed that one!!

Sometimes I wonder if the things that go randomly missing in my house, nowhere to be found (like my stereo remote that just disappeared) have just gotten chewed up and eaten by a bored puppy. Hmm..

That reminds me of a dream I had when I was flaring. I had to pull my poo out (don't know why I never get constipated), and some of my colon came out too. I kept trying to put the colon back in, but it kept coming out. I guess it's kind of like having a bad toothache and just wanting to pull the tooth out.
