Joy, my chihuahua loves to "gut" his plush toys and sometimes swallows that fluff. Although I observe him and collect the fluff after he is done "killing" his toy, he sometimes poops it out in long strings and sometimes needs help pulling it out ... ewwww... but I guess that is true love for your pets, right?

 be careful helping Joy out with the stringy fluff. my friend had a bearded dragon that ate a string and when she helped him out his intestines came too. fluff is probably not as big a problem but beware. :x

 

 Chris, my chihuahua's name is not Joy. I was referring to our board member Joy with the log-in "subdued".

I actually pulled on the turd my Chihuahua had dangling out of his butt. The fluff he ate kept the poop together and then some more. I assure you, his intestines are fine and are still where they belong.

     Reminds me of the time when my friend injected herself with her dog's insulin by mistake.  Both she and her dog were diabetics.  She was a nervous wreck.   She asked me what to do (like I would know).  My best advice was to just sit tight but if she were to start barking within the next 24 hrs to go to the ER.

I've often wondered about that too if one of my dogs ate any of my medication. My Jack Russel mix once made a mad dash for one of my Colazal when I accidently dropped it. I had to pry it out of her mouth.

Speaking of dumb dogs...we all know that Labs are not known for their high intelligence right? My black Lab once drank about 6oz of a pool/pond insecticide when she was about 8 months old. I realized it after about a half hour and she started to throw up. So I read the back of the jug and I induced vomiting in her per the instructions with egg whites. I had her eat an entire dozen of egg whites. I then rushed her to the vet ER and they would've put activated charcoal down her gut to induce vomiting but because I already did that, they just kept an eye on her to be sure she was fine. She even ate an entire bag of dove chocolates - wrapper and all (yes, another trip to the vet ER) and she ended up pooping these purple wrappers for a few days. Another trip to the vet ER - though nothing ingested this time was when she found a bottle and decided to chew it. Yep, she slashed her paw open and I had to take her in for stitches. I wasn't home when this happened, just my kids (my son was babysitting his sister while me and the hubby visited my Gma in the hospital) and my son called me up in hysterics yelling that Charlotte was bleeding all over the carpet.

Chocolate contains theobromine. A naturally occurring stimulant found in the cocoa bean, theobromine increases urination and affects the central nervous system as well as heart muscle. While amounts vary by type of chocolate, it's the theobromine that is poisonous to dogs.

Symptoms of Chocolate Dog Ingestion and Poisoning
You can recognize that your dog has eaten a toxic dose of chocolate from the symptoms. Within the first few hours, the evidence includes vomiting, diarrhea or hyperactivity. As time passes and there's increased absorption of the toxic substance, you'll see an increase in the dog's heart rate, which can cause arrhythmia, restlessness, hyperactivity, muscle twitching, increased urination or excessive panting.

This can lead to hyperthermia, muscle tremors, seizures, coma and even death.


I've had dogs in the past eat chocolate too and nothing bad had ever become of them. In fact they lived to be 18 years old before we had to put them down. But there was no way I was going to take that chance with my Lab because of the fact that she is pedigree. Not to mention a total sweetheart! :)

My dog ate a Lialda pill last night, and when searching for information I found this thread. I realize the thread is quite old, but I wanted to put my experience out there in case anyone else searches for the same thing. I have an eight pound, four year old Maltese, and she ate approximately three-quarters of a 1.2g Lialda (mesalamine) tablet, as well as a Flintstone’s Plus Iron vitamin. She had gotten into a pill organizer that was packed inside a zipped duffel bag that I had left on my bedroom floor after returning from out of town. I called the ASPCA Animal Poison Control, and they told me that the vitamin was not a concern (it did not contain xylitol and the vitamin quantities were not high enough to cause poisoning) but that the Lialda was very dangerous and could cause renal failure. I took her to an emergency veterinary hospital where they immediately induced vomiting and put her on fluids and antacids. In the morning they called to let me know that her blood work is within the normal range, but they are going to keep her hospitalized and on fluids for another day (a total of about 48 hours). If you found this thread by searching something along the lines of “my dog ate Lialda,” please get them to a vet IMMEDIATELY. I didn’t find much else online when I searched, so I hope that putting this out there can help someone!

I have you all beat -- My cat ate a used condom once. I called my vet panicked, and I had to wait for her to pass it. It was disgusting, but thankfully she was just fine. I do not know why, but she really likes latex... Lol. Other than this incident, she is a very intelligent cat!

I know we should not take a mesalamine tablet that is cracked or damaged, and should not chew a mesalamine tablet. Why? Mesalamine in the stomach can cause stomach-upset, nausea, vomiting, etc. No issues with Mesalamine hitting later in the digestive tract, as it's supposed to do.

Sounds like they over reacted a bit on the doggy to me, glad he's doing fine though!
