How bad is it to not go when you "gotta go"? How bad is it for you?

I remember learning something like the longer the stool sits in the intestines, the more water is taken out of it, resulting in a stool that will be harder to pass.

I'm not really sure but I know that when I am flaring, I CAN'T hold it if my life depended on it. While in remission, I can hold it longer and I find that if I do hold it longer, it actually makes my stool more formed. But, if I am not mistaken, holding it in for too long can cause constipation and I'm sure there are other technical terms that I can't come up with at the moment. :)

I can't hold it at all anymore either. I used to hold it all the time when I was younger, for hours upon hours, I wonder if that can cause UC. idea

My question was primarily when in remission and really in general - non-UC people.

Oh Boy! When really flaring, even if my life depended on it, it won't happen:)
Nothing like that twinge of urgency to send you racing to the nearest restroom! WHen I was flaring, and away for a weekend or holiday, I always found myself competing with the grandfathers in the house complete with matching newspapers under our arms:)

Most IBDers cannot "hold it", but for anyone (healthy or not) holding "it" in leads to constipation so I'd be very careful with that.

Sicklygirl, holding it like you did when you were younger doesn't cause it so no worries there (you didn't make this happen to yourself by holding it in).

Sicklygirl, that's funny you mention the holding it when you were younger.

I used to hold it for hours and hours as a youngster and was thinking the exact same thought just the other day...did I bring the UP on by my actions when I was a youngster.

Our 8yr old was following in my footsteps awhile back...he got really backed up/constipated and used to howl when he sat on the loo. Poor guy!

Yup Supersaw. I can sure relate, as most others here can.
Especially, when you're in a rush and pressed for time when each minute counts to be or go somehwere on time. Then BOOM!!, you can that twinge of an urge. It's not so bad when its just yourself. But when you're traveling or doing something with other pple - NOT FUN!

When I'm flare I don't stand a chance in holding it. There's only been one time I can remember holding it while in remission. We were on Maui and in the middle of nowhere and my dad wouldn't turn the car around so I could go so I HAD to hold it and I paid for it later...
It probably isn't good to hold and hold it and hold it just like it isn't good to hold you bladder.

I was on the phone yesterday and the urge came on. It was an important call so I had to hold it. I was in pain and the phone battery started beeping like it was going to die. I had to plug it in and sit patiently. I thought I was going to poo myself. Finally it got to the point where I HAD to go. I grabbed the charger and the phone and ran for the toilet. I plugged it in and stayed on the phone while I was on the toilet. I hope the guy on the other end didn't hear anything but he probably did...  skull

Hear is a question that I can only ask you guys. Has anyone tried using Depends? I am thinking of tring this, in case I have an accident.

I have not tried an adult diaper, but I would if the situation required it! I wonder, would the smell still be really bad? I know elderly family members who need to use them sometimes have odors about them that I assume mean they need a change...

Anyway, that anxiety when you try to go, because you know you won't be near a bathroom, but you can't go, is just AWFUL. The worst is after a rich meal in a restaurant, when you then have to walk back to the office or the hotel... everyone else thinks it's a good idea to take a walk after a meal, that's just crazy!!

I am going to give them a try. I hear they have oder control and are very obsorbent. Plus if you have an accident, they can be changed out easily. May give me a little piece of mind, especially when driving.

When things got really active for me I would wear a pad non-stop, definitely gave some peace of mind.

I think it's easier for girls to wear a pad than an adult diaper. We're used to wearing pads. There is something gross about adults wearing diapers. But then, diapers probably work better.

I think most people hold it in, especially when they are young. I used to never poo outside before I had Colitis. It wasn't difficult. Something in my brain said it was time to go as soon as I got to my front door in the afternoon/evening.

Now that I've experienced flareups, I have no trouble going outside. My time of going has also switched from when I get home in the evening to after I wake up in the morning. I don't know if it's Colitis related. Today I actually made it until after 1:00 PM before having my daily movement. And I woke up early this morning too.
