Play-Doh Poo!

I was just diagnosed in January with left sided UC (GI said I had it for years, I just lived with it).  The prednisone and colazal have cleared it up pretty much.  My question is if I should request Rowasa or the foam?  My poo comes out as if it were pressed through a Play-Doh mold.  Does this mean my rectum is still inflammed?  The poo is soft and formed.  Thanks in advance.

Current Regimen:

30mg Pred (tapering)

3 x 3 Colazal

BuSpar for GAD

Forvia multivitamin

Align Probiotic

Turmeric, Boswellia, Fish Oil, and Milk Thistle (for my liver)

I'm not sure exactly which one did it, but within two days of taking turmeric and boswellia, the blood virtually disappeared and my BM's were down to 2 a day.

PSA.Delhi - How long do you recommend taking the turmeric and boswellia? Is it safe long-term?

I take capsule supplements. I got them from the VitaminShoppe. I'm not sure of the dosage, I just follow the directions on the back of the bottle. Just make sure you get "standardized" capsules.

Is the poo thin (narrow)? My poo was narrow when my colon was inflamed. I think when I was coming out of my flares, the blood would stop first, and then the poo would gradually get wider.

Turmeric works for me too. I continue to eat mild curries every few days when I'm not flaring. I also eat a lot of spinach, which is also good for calming inflammation. And I drink a herbal tea that has many anti-inflammatory properties (Tension Tamer from Celestial Seasonings). I also take Probiotics. I guess you could say these are my maintenance medicines.

Peetey - I read somewhere that turmeric can upset ones stomach. Can you decease the amount?

Subdued - yes! They are pencil thin and sometimes come out flat??? My 3 year olds are bigger than mine! Lol

Quincy - my GI previously said I didn't need them because the colazal supposedly reached all the way??? Is this not true? I really think I need the rowasa.

It's possible some may reach, but I certainly wouldn't depend on that.  You should say you want to try them, because if they work, that will have you feeling better.  It's also a way for you to deal with  flares more early.

Both ends approach isn't a new concept...personally, I think some doctors don't get that.

I know I ask this before but maybe it got lost...

I agree about rectal meds.  You know I am on prednisone and maybe later on 6MP.  However, most of my "problems" are rectal.  I would like to use at least occasional rectal meds.  I have used Canasa, Rowasa and hydrocortisone enemas - what else is there for me who can't tolerate mesalamines and the hydrocortisone enemas caused me to bleed more.

Any ideas?  I am talking with doc next week when I go to 20 mg.

Oops my apologies that I missed your message and could not reply earlier. Well there are no side effects to my knowledge in so far as Turmeric is concerned. It is very useful and can be taken long term because it is the most effective antiseptic/anti oxidant and prevents cancer too. In so far as Boswellia is concerned, so far I have not seen any serious side effects. I have used both of them for years and found them to be very effective.
