Hi,
Several years ago I was prescribed clindamycin after a root canal.
2 weeks afterward, I ended up with C-diff/colitus which lasted close to a year.
The root canal failed last year, and I got another root canal.
Several weeks ago, the same tooth began hurting.
Got it x-rayed, and it is very infected, and now they want to do a apicoectomy on Monday.
The Doctor prescribed amoxicillin to take before the surgery, but I am afraid to take it because of what happened last time.
Is amoxicillin a safe antibiotic to take for those who had c-diff colitus?
Is there a safer antibiotic?
I also have penicillin K in the house, is that better?
I am very nervous, as I would rather loose a tooth than go thru the c-diff/colitus again.

Bactrim is a good antibiotic but I'm not sure if it would do anything for your tooth. I would talk to your GI and see what they recommend. You should definitely start a good probiotic along with sacchromyces boulardii.

My GI doctor suggests Cipro but I also have to take Flagyl along with it. I believe Flagyl keeps the "good" bacteria from getting destroyed by the Cipro. Know what you are going through with the infected tooth....been there....are you on prednisone at the moment? Seems like I always get a gum or tooth infection while on prednisone.

Bactrim, Cipro, and flagyl aren't very effective in treating dental abscesses. Amoxicillin, penicillin, and clindamycin work much better in the mouth. There is always a chance of getting c-diff after antibiotic treatment, but it's actually quite low with amoxicillin and penicillin. You do need to be on the antibiotic for the abscess prior to the apicoectomy. Your best bet it to watch your UC symptoms very closely during and after your antibiotic treatment, and seek help from your GI doc as soon as you have any concerns. They can treat c-diff pretty quickly & effectively if caught early.
For what it's worth, I'm a dentist posting here as a UC sufferer, and that's just my two cents. Good luck! -Erica

I'm allergic to penicillin. Guess that is the reason why my GI doctor suggests Cipro.

And don't forget the probiotics - yogurt at least - good bacteria.

Sounds similar to what I'm going through. I've had the dentist prescribe a zpack. I have no bad reactions to that.
Good Luck!!!!
