Anyone on Apriso-- this is a new once-a-day drug like Lialda, but it's indicated for REMISSION, not for FLARES.

The idea is that it dissolves at a lower PH (of 6), instead of 7, like most other UC oral meds. Many colitis colons don't reach PH 7, particularly when in a flare.

I got it at my GI today, as well as a coupon book to bring the drug cost down $50 each time. I've got a few samples, and will give it a shot.

FYI: it has come up in some other recent threads that Apriso contains Aspartame! / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC ... [etc.])

The inactive ingredients of APRISO capsules are colloidal silicon dioxide,
magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, simethicone emulsion ethylacrylate/
methylmethacrylate copolymer nonoxynol 100 dispersion, hypromellose, methacrylic
acid copolymer, talc, titanium dioxide, triethyl citrate, aspartame, anhydrous citric acid,
povidone, vanilla flavor, and edible black ink.


mmmmm.. edible black ink and vanilla flavor.

I wonder why the vanilla flavor?  If you belch a lot does it come up vanilla?

why in the world would it contain aspartame? I mean what are they THINKING? Most pills taste like nothing, or taste like crap... sweetener and vanilla? Ugh. Thanks for pointing that out!

Anyways, I've taken it for a week or so. I'll say this-- I'm going to give it a while longer. BUT my first impression is not a favorable one.

Basically it's a gigantic pill filled with a hundred tiny balls of medicine. These balls, at least for me, come out mostly intact. These balls are way harder than any seed, and in my opinion 'scratch' the colon lining. We're told to avoid sharp/hard items when flaring, so I'm confused why they design the pills this way.

Many years ago, I was on pentasa, which was exactly the same setup. Those balls would come out like they went in, and I was darn sure they weren't making my aggravated colon feel any better. Switching to Lialda, which is just a giant pill of 5-ASA with no sharp edges or tiny balls, was an improvement.

I'll give this a shot for a month or so, and then render my verdict.

The rep I sat with in the GI office had a small bottle filled with those to demonstrate. She said by making it that way the medicine gets spread out more in the colon rather than at one spot. It seemed pretty cool when she was talking about it. Are they dissolving in you or are you passing them?

I've gone back and forth between Lialda and Apriso. They both seem about the same.
