UC and Hair Problems?

I have been off medication for about 6 months now. I have been watching what I eat and have reduced my stress level. I only have a bad day every once in a while and had my last flare up in January (during New Years... :( )

However I am still loosing hair. I know that people loose a few hairs each day. But it is still out of control. I have about half as much hair as when I first got sick. I try to knot dry my and straighten my hair. I just wear it naturally curly most of the time.

I have tried so much! I am taking Biotin and Calcium everyday. I no longer am taking medication. I had even tried Rogain! I am getting desperate. I am not happy when I am getting ready for work in the morning and have to do my hair. I have to clean out my hair brush every other day and there is hair that is on my counter every morning. I just want to cry most mornings.

Please help. I will try anything right now.

MissMindy - I understand about the hair loss! It is very traumatic. I have gone through the cycle three or four times. about six months after I have been very sick with UC, I will loose hair in extreme amounts. The only thing I can be glad about is that it doesn't come out in patches! It comes out all over.

The hair does grow back! The cycles I've had for loosing hair have been anywhere from one week to two months. about two months after it stops falling out, it starts to regrow - then I have the little hairs poking out all over!

You are doing all of the right things. Biotin will help the hair grow back faster - after the loss period is over. I like to use the 5g capsules. When I am losing hair like that, I try not to style it too much. I will also use Nioxin shampoo and scalp treatment, but don't know how much that actually works. I've also found that I like a shorter hair style - it helps to "hide" the shorter hairs. I used to wear my hair long (mid back) but after the first loss and growth cycle cut most of it off.

When your body is sick or stressed, hair growth seems to take a back seat to healing. Try to be patient and not to stress - the hair will grow back.

Zinc might help you. I had bad hair loss many years ago when I first was put on high amounts of Asacol. I could pull my hair out with ease, strand by strand and it was horrible. I had very thick hair and it never grew back that way. My doc recommended zinc back then and it helped. I don't take it now, I take a multivitamin with zinc in it (or so I think). I am taking 6MP which causes hair loss/thinning of the hair.

Geminiunset, I have the same with the flyaway hair, but I use to call it either "baby bird hair" or "baby elephant hair" LOL. Just need to have a sense of humour about it, otherwise we will go insane.

Without a sense of humor, we'd be one sorry bunch of people!! Humor is a necessity! :)

I'm losing tons of hair even though I'm in remission. Some of it's slowly growing back, as in "baby bird hair."

I'm seeing a dermatologist next week; hopefully he'll be able to help.

Who did you find to do the fecal transplantation? I know some doctors will do it for c.diff, but I'm having troubling finding a U.S. doctor who will do it for those of us who suffer from UC.

I did it myself, using my granddaughter's feces. It was very easy. I took the gooey yellow substance (she was breastfeeding at the time) as soon as she pooed so as not to lose any bacteria, mixed the feces substance with warm water, and used a syringe to put it up my butt.

Woah! Wait... I have never heard of this. Why did you do this? What does it do? I am so confused... I just don't understand why someone would do that. I don't mean to sound rude or grossed out. But I just don't understand.
Please educate me...
