I saw an alternative doc and he did a blood test for my vit D levels. I was deficient, and he upped me to 5000 IU/day. This happened at the same time as some other med changes, but I've been feeling better...

I do 5000 IU D3 every 2 days in winter months. Not so much in summer since I am a vit D producing machine!!

Vitamin D is receiving alot of attention in the treatment of IBD and other diseases. Those of us living in cold, northern climates and/or working inside all day don't receive enough sunshine on our skin to produce the vitamin D we need and many are unknowingly deficient.

Which kind of Vitamin D, or does it matter? I take D3 for joint health (because it is "dry", not oil-based in a gel cap, which bothers me). I didn't know Vitamin D could help UC.

I take 2000 IU a day - it doesn't seem to help my guts, though. Should I take more?

From what I've read, D3 is the form to take.
Mitzo, I'd have your D levels tested before you go any higher.

It's probably a good idea to take vitD even if you think it doesn't help. I believe some steroids and Immune drugs can drain vitD from your system. They say vitD plays a key role in controlling your immune system.

some packaging doesn't state vitamin
D3
.
But the product ingredient will help.....it's called
cholecalciferol
.
Don't by the
D2
which is called
ergocalciferol.

Lots of testing going on in England with Vitamin D3 and a cure for IBD. They are linking the lack of sunlight with immune responses. I started taking 400IU, I might up it to 800 (taking 2 tablets).

Thats princesa. I visits St Marks Hospital and there were ads everywhere asking people to participate in a Vitamin D experient for IBD. St Marks is the leading IBD hospital in Europe. I think there is something in it.

I've been taking about
1000 to 2000 vit D a day for about
a month, don't know if it is helping or not taking so many things, but it is cheap enough vitamin. My sister who has RA, her doctor told her to take 10,000 vit D for it because her blood test came back very low on Vit D, my sister also had/has UC. So very well could be a connection.

Can check your levels at grassrootshealth.net. Fairly cheap at $30. I'll be curious to figure mine out.

What's a normal vitamin D level? Mine's 22 and my PCP wants me to take 50000 IU per week for 8 weeks!
