Does anyone experience tenesums?

I get this and it can last for hours, and feel very ill with it...leg cramps and chills, not to mention the straining. I take a bental and immodium, and just wait it out, which is hours. Usually I would just have this once in a while but lately its with every flare...about 3 times a week.

Are there any special medications to help this or anything to ease this.

Tenesmus = inflamed rectum. Have you tried rectal meds, such as Cortifoam, Cortenema, or the 5-ASA retention enemas???? In the UK, Europe, & Australia UCers also have the option of using mesalamine rectal foam, but it still is not available in N. America. / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC ... [etc.])

Yes I have been using Canasa for well over a year now. Use to use Rowasa and also have used colacort. Im wondering if I should ask my doctor to start back on the colacort once again. Maybe a little steriod would help now.

I had been on 6-mp for 2 yrs, but due to liver enzymes I went off around christmas time. I had flared like this at times even with the 6-mp. Going to try sulfasalazine.  I seem to glare for months at a time and then Im good for months and then bam its back again.

I just didnt know if there is a special med that helps control that once it begins. For the last few weeks I have been flaring about 2-3 times a week, always with Tenesmus.

Yes, I have it slightly now...but not to the extent you have it.

I would suggest to not use the imodium and up the bentyl.

What dosage of bentyl are you on?

     Isn't tenesmus the feeling that your bowel is never emptied even after going?  If so, I ALWAYS have that when flaring.  I do think that Cort enemas would help in giving you some relief for that.

Yes, Christine, tenesmus is the feeling of incomplete bowel evacuation and I've had that many times day in and day out for months and for me cortifoam has always worked the best.

Definitely try Cortifoam. It stays where you put it, unlike the liquid enemas. You can even put it in during daytime because you don't have to lie down afterward to keep it inside. / Old Hat

I will give my doctor a call tomorrow morning, and will ask to try the cortifoam again. That did seen to help me once before. I think he will also suggest trying the sulfasalazine.

The bental I take is 10mg 3 times a day. I only take the bentyl and the imondium when Im flaring so bad and I need to get it into control, because I have to get to work, or I have plans. Other than that I try to let it take it course.  I will try taking only the bentyl next time and not the imodium. Seems like the imodium works better than the bentyl though. I also have Librax but that does not work as well for me.

When Im in a flare, every time I move my bowels is a flare, with extreme tenesmus after Im emptied out. The tenesmus will last for hours which is exhausting. I have this 3 times a week, the other days I have no bowl movements at all. This can continue for months and then I will go into remission for 8 mths or so. Its a crazy way to live, I never know when it will happen, and when it will go away.

after i pooped 3 days ago, i have had this feeling all day and ive pooped like 3 times since then, it wont go away, i dont know what to do im scheduled for a colonscopy on monday, but does ne one experience it constantly not just after a bm? my anus feels loose, and i am not gay lol

WeEn are you on rectal meds? I've always had success with cortifoam when having tenesmus issues.

whats a prep? i just got directions for a clear liquid diet, this is the first time this is happened to me i have no idea *** is going on.. cuz i think i have uc but im not sure, i had a bad bug, virus, gastroenteritis, food poisoning whatever the **** you wana call it 3 weeks ago and my stomach has never felt the same afterwards, always loose, thin stools or plain diarrhea, then 3 days ago now i got this feeling in my anus, but u guys are saying this feeling will go away with some meds? as long as i know that i think ill b fine, i am on no meds other then lomotil i take occasionally if the d gets watery,.. am i allowed to take vicodin cuz the tenesmus seems to b alot more painful at night, just uncomfortable during the day like air is getting in through my anus lol.. but i dont experience ne bleeding or pain when i poop so im not sure if i have uc or not will the colonscopy be able to identify whatever i have? im not sure if i can last til monday im drivin myself mad!!!

o wait ya there was some meds on it, i dont have the directions on me rite now but the day of i was supposed to take 2 tables twice during the day of sometin that begin with a d i think, and miralax.. when i get it ill re post, thanks for all your help
