Hi Everyone,

I have been in a flare since February and while I have shown some improvement, I am still having troubles, still on 60 of pred and being scheduled for another colonoscopy this week to see just what is going on.

I am wondering how much time people usually spend away from work. I have not been too work since February. I do not want to go back until I am better but I may have to do some planning.

While I realize that everyone is different, based on your improvements, when could you go back to work? How long were off (the longest or the usual)?

I guess I am afraid of going back, starting to taper pred and being sick all over again or just making my recovery take longer.

Oops Don't ask me. I have been out of office for quite some time at a stretch this time. But earlier, I used to manage somehow.

In so far as UC is concerned, did your doctor suggest some cortisone or mesacol enemas. Try the one which are cortifoam. They are effective. Please consult your doctor and take his opinion before trying them out.

Unfortunately I had to give up working .. everytime I got a new job id get real ill...so ive been away for 7 months now

I took 6 moths off of work. Temporary disability. I didn't want to go back to work until I was way better. I wasn't 100% better until sept of 2007. Before then the smallest stress would give me abdominal pain and put me into tears. I guess it's when you feel ready.

I guess it depends on what kind of work you do. I took two weeks sick time in 1985 when I was first diagnosed, and that's it. Otherwise, I need to work so I do. Even if I need to use the bathroom every hour or so, my brain still works. It's a distraction from feeling miserable, if you enjoy your work. And I don't take my good job for granted, either.

I have been off work steadily for about a month now. I work in a school library resource centre, and my coworkers are very supportive, but I still have found that managing my symptoms as well as my life (I'm a single parent) has been too much for me. The prednisone is making me lose my mind more than the disease I think, so I'm hoping once I can taper off that and get my brain back to normal, I'll be able to go back to work.

I also worked in an office and missed a total of maybe 6 days due to UC during my 4 1/2 year flare. I was able to arrange to work from home those days, so never really had to miss. I went to work, then came home and rested so I could go back the next day. I essentially had no life, but my job (and the insurance) was very important to me.

I have been out of work since Feb. 13th. I finally had surgery March 13th so the past month I have been recovering from that. My flare was soooo bad that everyday I would get with the intention of going to work but just couldn't do it. Ended up in the hospital for a week, got out and then went back in for the surgery. Now I am on short term disability, but I will probably go back to work April 30th.

Luckily, I have a very supportive boss and wonderful co- workers. :)))

I work in an office setting as well for a very supportive employer.  My job is fairly independent so I can come and go (to the bathroom) as I please.  My only struggle is meetings, I usually have to either hope I go before or I end up leaving during the meeting for a quick bathroom visit. 

When I was first diagnosed I had to to take 2 days off because I was in so much pain (hospitalized).

hello new to this im on 40mg pred 4000 sulfizine 80mg nexium ive been to emergency room 4 times and hospitol for 10 days in the last two years the first year i just dealt with it until all the blood started im a singel father and had worked hard this last 6 month i realy aint shore im not dying i drive a dump truck so you understand how hard its been im depressde tired all the time doctor wouldnt give me nothing to help with sleeping and depresion and the pred makeing me react angry ive missed so much work i might loose my house wich will be the second time they have try to forclose i just wanderd if anyone gets diabilty social securty or something that would ease some stress
