Sigmoidoscope while flaring?

     I went to my GI doctor today and he wants to do a sigmoidoscope on me Friday.  He knows I am flaring.  So far just mucus and pressure, no bleeding and no diarrhea.  However, I am afraid to take those Fleets enemas.  Guess the real worry I have is perforation of the ulcers.  Anyone else ever have a sigmoidoscope while in a flare?

I had a full-on c-scope while flaring (15+ episodes of urgent diarrhea a day) to make my initial diagnosis.

I've had numerous sigs over the years and yes even while flaring. Actually the Fleet enemas made me feel a bit better (for a little while anyway). Sort of "cooled" things off in there. But it did hurt coming out! LOL I'm actually glad to be past the 10 year mark because I no longer get sigs but full scopes. I prefer the colonoscopy over the sigs anytime!

I had one too during my first flare. I don't even know if that was considered a flare or just longterm inflammation but yeah, I had a sigmoidoscopy and I was ok. Are you getting sedated? I wasn't. It was a bit uncomfortable but not unbearable. The enemas weren't bad on me. I hope you find some answers smilewinkgrin

Yes, Christine - last November I had the sigmoidoscopy and was and have been flaring for months.  I did not have a enema.  Took the same Miralax and was sedated.

Just had one and it set my system haywire for a few days (which I extended to a week through bad dietary choices). Like before he took the biopsy samples, I had no blood in the stools... but I did after for about 3 days.

Also, the enema was one of the least pleasant things I've experienced in my life. I was crying so bad the poor little Korean lady who was watching me ran to get the nurse to let me go to the bathroom after 2 minutes, even though I was supposed to hold it for 10. Seriously, humiliating. And there are no private rooms in Korea. You're out there, the only white person in the room, with a ton of other staff and patients staring at the foreigner.

I did the enemas at home the night before. I didn't hold them. The doctor said I should try to hold them for a few minutes but the minute I squirted the water in I had to run to the toilet

I haven't had to use fleet enemas in years for either a sigmoid or a colonoscopy (flaring or not). I had thought about using a couple on my own for my last encounter of the colonoscopy kind because I didn't want to be accused of poor housekeeping down there. Since they are not strictly necessary, perhaps your GI will allow you to bypass the enemas. If you are concerned, it is worth a try.

I'd be more concerned about being properly sedated during the procedure. I've had an unsedated sig while flaring and it was NOT pleasant.

I agree!! I told the doctor I would not have it without sedation. They gave me same as for colonoscopy but lower/shorter lived doseage as it doesn't take as long. I was fine and don't remember it - thank goodness!

I agree, unsedated sig while flaring is a bit of an ouchy. Enemas not pleasant but definitely not killer. Go to your happy place! :)

But I can see why they order them--they want to know what's going on. Good luck!!

I was flaring somewhat and them enema's were quite painful for me and caused me to bleed like crazy for days after, but it all depends on the person and where the problem is. I end up diluting the rest of them fleets about half with warm water and it wasn't as bad then. By the way it was a generic fleet brand so maybe that was part of it as well.

     Oh great!  LOL!  I am about to go ahead with the enema as soon as I finish this post.  Don't know if I will be able to do the second enema though.  My sigmoidoscope is scheduled for 3:15 this afternoon and it is now 12:30.  Still no blood, but urgency and mucus.  I can just bet the blood will come after this and prednisone will be my next step.  The last time my doctor tried to do a sigmoidoscope my blood pressure went up to 210/110 because  I was so uptight and NO, he never sedates me for a sigmoidoscope...only colonoscopies...I go out for them.  Wish me luck!  I'll give an update later if I survive this..lol.

I am sure you will survive.  However, I would NEVER have either test with sedation and my doctor knows that.  I would refuse - he gives me same for all internal tests!  He knows I am too "NERVOUS" any other way.

I had one in the hospital last month with sedation and no prep (just a liquid diet the day before).

I hope it went well! I can't imagine having no sedation during a flare. I had a full scope and the morning after prep is the worst I have ever felt. It really screwed up my system. I couldn't wait for them to take the pain away. Once they did, it was the best I'd felt in weeks. Didn't last of course.
