She gave me some slick, full color informative brochures and a quarterly magazine that linked to a high dollar, gorgeous, interactive Web site. All of these information pieces were supposed to educate me about UC and my treatment options. It struck me as odd how they all basically said "no matter how you feel, keep taking your Asacol." The magazine had a feature where readers wrote in with their experiences. All the letters talked about how great Asacol was and urged others to stay on their meds, even if they were feeling better. I looked at the fine print to see who was producing this stuff... Proctor and Gamble... makers of Asacol.
I felt the same way when I went to my GI's office, only it was for Lialda. The brochure, which was for controlling UC, really pushed Liada. Like the one for Asacol, it said that no matter how I felt, I should keep taking my meds. It used scare tactics by telling me that if I didn't, I could get another flare up. It also had features in which readers told about
their experiences. Of course the readers said how great Liada was and urged others to stay on their meds, even if they felt better. I took one of Liada's online surveys awhile ago so that I could tell them how much better I was doing without medication and how diet really helped me. Of course, their survey was written in a way that I could not.
What's very interesting is that on their home page, they say
"In clinical trials, people taking Lialda who achieved remission had:
* No rectal bleeding
* Significant decrease in trips to the bathroom
* Reduced inflammation of the lining of the colon"
This statement says nothing. It does not tell us whether or not Lialda was responsible for those people achieving remission, nor does it tell us what percentage of people in the clinical trials achieved remission.
Lialda also says that the safety and effectiveness of Lialda has been established in two 8-week trials. On another page, Lialda says that the safety and effectiveness of Lialda has been established for up to 8 weeks. What about
the safety of taking Lialda for more than 8 weeks? How many people who are taking Lialda have been taking it for more than 8 weeks?
