Colonoscopy - Different Clean Out

Ugh, I knew it was coming - it's been 7 years since son's one and only colonoscopy - the doctor wants to do it next Wed. I haven't told son yet. He is still in bed, but has already been up twice to use the restroom - not a good sign. He's been flaring for a couple of weeks.

I only got to talk to the nurse, but doctor didn't say anything about adding any other meds at this time.

The clean out will be the Miralax/gatorade/ducolax - How is this one? Nurse said it is pretty gentle and not as much risk of dehydration?

Son has done the GoLytly in the past and daughter did the two day clear diet/mag citrate.

Son is NOT going to be a happy camper when he hears this, although I know we are long over due and I am kind of curious after all these years what is going on in there. Son's original dx was IC based in part because the prometheus test was negative for both Crohn's & UC, although the biopsies pointed to UC.

Thankfully, for the first time the scope will be here in town - 3 miles or so from our house. That will make things a bit easier.

I am not looking forward to telling son this news....

So how have you all found this clean out regime to be?

I always had to drink the nasty solution or they would give me multiple horrible enemas! I think this sounds less invasive. It is basically a clear liquid diet and laxatives. I would take that any day over the other prep.

Also, make sure he doesn't drink red gatorade- they always told me it could mess up the view inside.

I did the Miralax and Gatorade for my last clean out two years ago. It is really gentle but stills has a bad taste. Good luck.

I have done it I think three times. Overall, it's probably the best clean out but it still sucks. THere is so much to drink and it takes a long time to kick in. I hate the taste of gatorade, if I didn't it might be better.

Just pick a flavor he will never want to drink again, lol. I still can't stand the smell of the lemon lime gatorade for that reason.

I got really sick and ended up throwing up while I was on the toilet cramping. I wouldn't do it again if I had an option.

I've only had one colonoscopy and I took Miralax/gatorade/ducolax. Wasn't too bad. I just can't ever drink orange Gatorade again.

I just had a colonoscopy last week and was prescribed the 2 liters of MoviPrep. It was pretty similar to the GoLytly (read: gag). So I would be very enthusiastic about anything involving gatorade!!
Being a mom of two little ones, I am all about bribery. Maybe he could have something to look forward to when he's done with the scope? Buy him something he's been wanting? I bet his 'toys' are more expensive than my 3 yo's, however! lol

I've got a scope next Monday and opted for the pill prep. In the past, I've always done the phospho soda.

when i had my sigmoidoscopy, i threw up all of the clean out stuff. I was worried he would not have me come in, but the doctor said it was fine. I didn't get any enemas or anything. However, I really didn't have anything in me, since at that time I was pretty much unable to eat at all anyway

I can't remember what it was called, but they were 2 small bottles of clear fluid. I mixed it with Sprite and it really wasn't that bad. The nurse recommended the Sprite.

Of the various clean out procedures I have taken over the years, the gatorade one was the easiest. To make it even more pleasant, I cut the miralax down by about 1/2 - 3/4 of what was listed. Still did the job.

The only thing I really dislike about gatorade is all the sugar - I'm not used to that anymore. I felt like Bart Simpson when he OD'd on squishy's. Next time I will find a sugar-free alternative.

Oh, I mixed the MIralax with Crystal Light (sugar free), as this was what the doctor suggested. I actually did not notice a taste to the Miralax at all

I wonder if you need to use the dulcolax? I think the miralax was enough for me and the dulcolax made me throw up. Can't be 100% sure about that.

I have always found the gallon preps the easiest to handle.

Have you considered asking your son his preference and whether this is something he wants to do?

Miralax/Gatorade is considered to be "mild" as c-scope preps go & less likely to cause dehydration. Halflytely might be an alternative as it requires drinking much less liquid than other such preps + no. of accompanying pills has been cut, too. The gastro should likely involve your son in discussion of prep to get his compliance + take some of that burden off your shoulders. / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC ... [etc.])
