Pale/yellow stool - when to worry?

I've been having sporadic bouts of having greenish/yellow bile in my stool and sometimes with pale yellow stool.  When should I start worrying that something else is going on?  I've been getting this about twice a week for the past month or two.  I get no other pain such as if it's associated with the gall bladder (upper right side - though I do get an occasional pain in the lower right) nor do I have any other liver problems evident (yellowing of the skin/eyes, itching etc). I take no Pepto Bismo nor Tums/Rolaids.  Also, my diet hasn't changed and I don't really eat much fatty things.  In another medical forum, someone mentioned that the gall bladder can spasm - anyone else hear of that?

Hmmm I had a couple of days of pale stools last month. I posted and someone gave me a link about what pale stools could mean. I'll try to find it for you.

I know long time ago Colazal initially caused my stools to take on a yellowish hue. I'm guessing you haven't just started Colazal though.

That is how my last flare started.  I didn't think it was my UC because I have never had it present that way before.  But I went through every other possibility, and sure enough when I started the prednisone, it cleared up.  I hope this is not the case with you, but keep an eye on it.

I have gone 3 times this morning (which is my norm for remission) and it's like a super light yellow color. I have to call my GI anyway for the results of my bloodwork from last week so I might ask the nurse. I have brought this up to my GI in the past but he didn't seemed concerned at the moment. And no, I'm no newbie to Colazal (been on it for 3 years). I was thinking, gall bladder pain is in the upper front right yes? I've been having these strange ping like pains under my rib, in the back on the right side. Could that be from the gall bladder too? Or what is over in that area?? lol I don't know my anatomy very well.

Two summers ago I was having horrible right shoulder pain that went around to my right breast. My primary immediately said gallbladder. I had an ultrasound and it showed no stones. We have yet to figure out what was causing the pain.

Let us know what the doc/nurse says.

I do have right shoulder pain but I think mine is due to a pinched nerve. I called the GI but he's out for an emergency so I won't hear back from him until tomorrow.

ive been to the doctors recently after having blood tests and he was concerned and confused as my ALT was high and he said this was due to inflamed liver

reading your posts about having pain in the right side , under the rib and round the back sounds just like what im getting . ive never had troube on that side from my crohns / colitis so im a bit worried .. my pee was very yellow for a week or so and i did notice stools becoming lighter in colour too .

im hping my next blood test will show lower ALT or they can do something ... i can live with the chrohns but liver or gall bladder problems doesnt sound nice

i would be keen to hear what you get from your results

Sherry - I was having gall bladder pain too, they did an ultrasound and found nothing....but GI put me on otc prilosec and it is a fantastic help to me.

I have yellow and green poo a lot lately too.

Everything such as green or yellow poo consistently is a cause for concern...at least to tell the doc if it can't be narrowed down to food.

Sherry....please let us know what the doc says tomorrow.

Well I got a call back from my GI's nurse and he said that it's nothing to worry about. That sometimes stool will do that on occasion. If it continues then I will pester him some more.

Humedi - welcome to Healingwell! :) Do you have Crohns or Uc? Sometimes we need to find our new "normal". For me, my "normal" is up to 3 times a day and while in remission I have no urgency, pain, blood and my bm's are mostly formed. Sometimes mush though too. I think it might be different then Crohns in regards to new bowel habits - don't really know to tell the truth. But no, I don't think you're in remission just because of the fact that you are going about 6 times a day. You don't need to bleed in order to be in a flare. If you don't want to try meds there are more natural routes to go such as changing your diet, starting a probiotic, take natural inflammatories such as Bee Propolis (If you're not allergic to bees that is) and avoid Nsaids such as Ibrophen, Advil, Aleve. Look over the posts on here if you haven't had a chance because they are quite informative.

UC, Crohns and even Diverticulitis have been misdiagnosed when the true culprit is really Celiac disease.

over my 48 years of living with this disease I swear I have had every color stool possible. Sometimes even striped...red blood, white mucous, and dark, dark ...
somewhat patriotic ...LOL for an American.
It's always good to check it out but sometimes it's other drugs, some food mixtures.

Sorry to dig up this old post.

I've been having yellow stools for just over a year now. Its usually yellow with shades of green. I have urgency/frequency and gas that accompany the yellow stool. I am going on average 4-5 times a day (mainly after meals). No blood. Stools are usually not formed but loose if i dont intervene (as in i dont take any supplements etc.). When taking psyllium, 50% of the time my stools will be formed but still yellow with frequency and the stools float. Ive always thought the yellowness is from fast transit. However yesterday i took 2 imodiums and didnt have a BM at all (yay?). This morning, i poo and its all entirely formed like hardish pebbles but they are all still yellow...

I thought if the yellowness is from fast transit, when i slow transit time with imodium the yellowness should turn to brown? I had a second poo after lunch and its still yellow... When i was on an antidepressant (Prestiq) at the start of this year, my frequency dropped to 2 per day but my stools were even more yellow.

Having had these symptons for over a year, Ive undergone numerous tests that show no invaders or structural abnormalities.

If it is not fast transit, does anyone know what else it could be?

When mine are like that it's upper GI issues.. Reflux. I also have no gallbladder so digesting fats is an issue.anything that causes fast digestion causes yellow stools. I guess it would depend when the Imodium starts to slow things down.. I'd say the yellow comes from bile

Would be interested to hear others' comments or observations. Not sure if no one is able to provide constructive advice or if my post is being ignored. If the later, would appreciate to know why so i may rectify any misunderstandings.

Max-I would report this to your doctor.

In addition to UC, I have celiac disease, which commonly produces pale stools.

It would be worth asking a doc about this symptom.

Wow, this is an old post! But guess what? Yep I still have yellow stool. I've told my GI numerous times but he doesn't say much. He says it's the food I eat but he's not listening....I don't eat the same thing every day.

Btw, I haven't been on Colazal for a year and I still have yellow stool.

Max, have you had your gall bladder checked?

I have bright yellow stool when I'm flaring or heading into a flare. It's really bright yellow. I've told my GI this...all my blood tests are normal and I have no pain. He wrote me a script for Questran thinking it was bile. I haven't tired it yet but will tonight since this mornings stool was really bad.

Red: sorry to hear u still have yellow stools. I know what u mean about the GI not listening. Mine does that too. I wonder why they dont tKe stool colour seriously. My diet is different each day but still yellow stools. Ive had my liver checked but not my gall bladder. How do i go about checking that? Ultra sound?

Rbartolo: hope u are feeling better soon and that questran will be your answer. Ivr tried questran and even colestid and sucralfate but with no help.

I'm not really sure how they check the gall bladder. I know one test they use is the HIDA scan: http://www.mayoclinic.org/tests-procedures/hida-scan/basics/definition/prc-20015028

However, I really don't much other than that.

I had yellow stools when I was at my worst, pooping constantly. It was neon yellow, like vitamin b pee yellow. GI didn't seem concerned. Also, it lasted a long time, even after my pooping was forming and only going 3-5 times a day...it eventually went away. No idea why or what it was.
