What are prednisone side affects? And why are there so many people against taking it?

Fatigue
Anxiety
Bloated
Moon Face
Personality change
brittle joints
Acne
greasy face/hair
monstrous appetite
short temper/snappy
bone loss
muscle weakness

that's from personal experience, I'm sure I'm forgetting at least a couple

I have
acne (though that went away)
bloated face
short temper
extreme night sweats
purple spots on my stomach
trouble sleeping
hair loss (may have been from the Asacol)
and I'm pretty sure my blood sugar is messed up...I'll get the results at my appointment on Tuesday

When I was on it, I exercised, they said I kept the weight off pretty well. I had the chubby face goin' on. As for mood swings... at school, I was constantly giggly, I felt high almost.. prolly from lack of oxygen laughing. But a home I could get pissy. I also had some hair loss, and it turns out my zinc was low. I might've had acne, I don't remember.

I know people also talk about some long-term side-effects on here, but I don't know what they are. Some bone-related things, I think? Someone fill us in?

My mom had another brief stay in the hospital due to her flare. She'll be 70 next month so I've been trying to stay on top of things. Her doctor started her on pred, enough for two weeks. She's been having terrible shakes in her hands and is very dizzy and weak when she stands up. I didn't know if that could have been side effects from her meds. She was perfectly fine until her flare up about a month ago.

Is she anemic? That will cause her to feel like that, too

Long-term side effects include thinning and aging of the skin, cataracts, diabetes and osteoporosis. Also it can cause a nasty condition called osteonecrosis in which the bone in one or more major joints (hips, knees, shoulders) dies and begins to necrose, or break down.

I have been on prednisone 5 months - tapering down now and on 5 mg.  The only side effects I worry about are long term.  I have liked prednisone.  Made my skin softer, arthritis much better, more energy and stopped my bleeding when on 40 mg. which returned at 10 mg.  But, dangerous to take long term especially for you younger folks!
