How about eating meat??? My boyfriend is convienced that this is because I eat meat! (he is, of course, an avid vegitarian) He seems to relate all health problems to a carniverous lifestyle... but humans have been consuming meat for their entire existance! He claims the steriods and antibiotics added to meat now have created these issues in us. Was anyone a vegan prior to diagosis?
I was (and still am) a vegetarian for several years before diagnosis. I agree with your boyfriend that all the steroids, antibiotics and other crap in meat is not healthy for humans (and it's definitely not humane for the animal...), but I don't know about
it causing UC since I hadn't eaten any of it for several years prior. I do not agree with you that humans have been consuming meat for their entire existence. It couldn't hurt to try going veg for a while and see if you feel better. I am working my way to becoming vegan. It's hard for me to give up the cheese and yogurt though.
To answer your other questions, I did take vitamins before getting diagnosed. I ate a very healthy diet before diagnosis, with lots of fruits, veggies and whole grains. Occasional treats would be chocolate, ice cream or chips I guess. I have never traveled out of the country. I don't know what blood type I am. No one in my family has IBD that I know of. I first got symptoms at age 23. Soothing foods during a flare would be bananas, rice and applesauce although nothing is very soothing to eat during a bad flare. I was going through a very stressful time before diagnosis. I have gone through lots of stressful times though in the past and I never got UC then...
