what is the chance it will get worse again?

Hi Everyone!

I had a sigmoidoscopy today because I have stomach pain and bleeding and the ASA meds and proctofoam weren't working so the dr wanted to take a look because he was about to have me try remicade to help. My last colonoscopy was in april and showed severe inflammation. Today....there was mild inflammation!! Which is great news...the only difference between now and april was that I have been on prednisone since last April so we are sure that is why my inflammation has improved drastically. Now my GI says were are going to stay away from remicade unless needed but we are going to start weaning prednisone. I guess my question is since Im still inflammed (just not as bad) what is the chance that it will turn severe again Im totally off of prednisone?? Im excited to be off of prednisone in the next month...but worried all the symptoms will return when Im done weaning.

Easier said than done but please don't stress yourself out about the "what if's", you'll drive yourself crazy and the stress of worrying about it will likely be the reason it might get worse, try and take each day/moment at a time, I drove myself nuts for yrs worrying about the "what if's" and it never got me anywhere.

Take deep breaths and relax once you've weaned totally off pred, it's common with pred for symptoms to re-appear but that doesn't mean it always will, especially if your maintinance drugs are kicked/ing in.

Remicade works well for a lot, maybe most people. Your goal is to get off of prednisone though, you've been on it for a long time (8 months it sounds like?). If you're unable to stay off of prednisone after trying all the medications, you will probably want to consider surgery. Has your doctor expressed concern about you being on prednisone long term? I'm not a doctor though, so it's always best to go in for a visit with one.

well we were going to do remicade after teh scope but now that the inflammation went from severe to mild he doesn't want to use it yet. He wants to try to wean off the pred and see if my symptoms stay the same..... Although im not sure if he is just going to settle for having mild inflammation or if he has another idea when I go back and se him in 4 weeks.
